Hi guys,

I might need to change from manual to auto due to a back problem. I currently have a manual E46, and pretty decided to stay with the E46s but get an auto one.

Was wondering if anyone here drives an auto E46 and if they could let me know how good the E46 autobox is, does it feel rapid, is the gear change quick and smooth etc?

Cheers,

Mal

I had an E39 530i which I'm sure is the same as the E46 box. I've not much to compare it to as it's the only auto I've ever owned but I didn't think it was bad at all.

It's not going to be as great as the latest models but I never found it to be slow and it was very smooth. Never found it hunting or selecting the wrong gear or anything like that. Try and find one to take for a drive but I doubt you'll have any issues with it.

Its pretty smooth compared to most auto-boxes and if you have sport option it can be a bit of fun. I get the odd lunge if i floor it a bit but, nothing thats not to be expected.

Why are you posting the same thread as last week. You have already asked about auto e46s

As we all said last week, the box is excellent.

Buy a Focus as they are much better than a Gloff.

No Fords, no Vauxhalls, no Skodas, no VWs, no Seats, no Saabs, no Volvos....

...budget is a fiver

in seriousness, I've never found any reviewer to really moan at BMW autos, so would have thought they were up there with the rest of the class?

BMW 'Sport' models dont handle well, they are not 'sports orientated', they are 'comfort orientated'.

Comes a point where sarcasm spawned from other threads/internet arguments that spews into other threads becomes useless and un-informative especially for those who have no idea what you are on about, regardless of the number of apostrophes you use.

Indeed but as this is a curiously bizarre duplicate of a question he asked only last week it doesn't really matter.

Because the other thread got taken over with talk of steering wheels etc!

Anyway, I'm thinking about a 530i or 535i auto now, question is, 530 or 535? The 0-60 and top speeds are very similar, but the 535 has a lower mpg, it is an older engine?

Cheers,

Mal

The 535i is a V8, the 530i is an Inline Six. Do not buy a 535i, it is a completely pointless car. It offers the performance of a 530i and the running costs and fuel economy of a 540i.
