Well, I've had mine 3 weeks now and I can honestly say that I have never detested an inanimate object with such revulsion.

I needed a phone and didn't want an Iphone particularly, so was persuaded by CPW to have the Hero as "all samsung phones are rubbish" Oh god how I wish I had walked out then:(

I'm a simple sort of chap and only really want a phone for making calls and sending texts, I don't really mind if the phone I am using doesn't do this. However, the Hero doesn't even manage to do these things. Its not a good phone and it doesn't do much else reliably either. Let me explain:

1. During calls, the screen goes black, therefore if you want to use an IVR (press 1 for this option, 2 for this option etc) you can't unless you keep it "alive" by fidling with the trackball (kind of difficult when its pressed against your ear)

2. Bluetooth support. Oh dear oh dear. It doesn't do bluetooth very well. I have a car that has bluetooth and the fun I had trying to get it to work. It still doesn't, what it does it connect, disconnect, connect, disconnect ad infinatum. Sometimes you get lucky and about 60% of your call might come through the car kit. I'm not the only person to suffer this and its not limited to my car or even one bluetooth headset, in fact it even affects the bluetooth headsets that HTC make.

The fact that such a new phone is outshone by a 5 year old W950i is laughable. If you buy a Hero, you can't view the contacts on the phone other than via the phone itself. I can do this on my W950i which supports rSIM, but not on a Hero.

3. Phone app. Oh dear. Once you have your contacts in place, be careful when you dial because the phone will randomly select a totally different contact. Frequently.

4. Slowness. Unless you have root access and download an app killer, expect to wait around a lot for anything to happen. You can't kill apps natively and they just build up and build up until the memory runs so low that the OS starts killing them. Great in theory, but you have to live with slowness on a par with continental drift until it does.

5. Wireless. More unstable than a drunk schizophrenic on poppers. Turns on then off and back on again on a whim.

6. SMS messages. It arranges them into threads, not the traditional way, so you get a large jumble of sms, which can take a while to scroll through.

7. MMS messages. If you get a MMS message from someone, the only way you can see what they have sent you is to save the file to the memory card and connect the device to a pc or if its a picture, you can view it in the album app. Otherwise you just get a black screen.

8. Text prediction. Even if you turn it off, it STILL replaces what you have typed with what it thinks you should have typed. For example, you can have it autosuggest words as you type. This is fine until it comes across words it doesn't know. You can try hitting the send button, but it won't let you and you can try hitting the arrow down, but this only comes up with more suggestions for the word you are trying to type. The only way out is to hit space, which replaces the word you typed, you then have to delete it and enter the word you wanted.

Funnily enough, it seems to have a built in profanity checker too. My thoughts on the device (I won't call it a phone as it fails at doing this) come out as a "Ducking peace of shape" Quite humorous I thought.

I also find that when you go to send a text, you have it all typed perfectly and then hit send. The device will then alter the words it doesn't recognise and send what it thinks you are trying to say.

All in all, I have never felt such an idiot for wasting my money on such a worthless waste of plastic.

HTCs response to my queries have met with either bad Engrish or a total glossing over of the fact that they have released something onto the market way ahead of when it was ready. For example, I questioned why mine and many others carkits didn't work with it and got told "maybe the phone is overheating"

I am however going to see if there is an update in the next few months as I realise they haven't tested this device thoroughly enough so will be holding off selling it on the bay.

In the mean time, my 5 year old W950i beats it hands down on just about every aspect other than screen size.

You can alter the time that it takes for the screen to go black during a call. Yes it's a bit of a pain that it's so short in the first place but it's readily changeable.

3. Phone app. Oh dear. Once you have your contacts in place, be careful when you dial because the phone will randomly select a totally different contact. Frequently.

If you're dialing a specific number, don't forget that it recognises the letters corresponding to the numbers you have hit so you can quickly type in someones name as well as searching for the numbers you've input. Never had a different contact turn up that I didn't want :s

4. Slowness. Unless you have root access and download an app killer, expect to wait around a lot for anything to happen. You can't kill apps natively and they just build up and build up until the memory runs so low that the OS starts killing them. Great in theory, but you have to live with slowness on a par with continental drift until it does.

Some people report lag, I myself haven't noticed it unless I've got multiple apps running. A new update soon to be released will solve this problem (and has been shown to do so, not just hype).

5. Wireless. More unstable than a drunk schizophrenic on poppers. Turns on then off and back on again on a whim.

Wireless probably doesn't turn on and off, but the connection will drop if you're unfortunate enough to have a router it doesn't like. I myself have managed to connect with the wireless to more than 10 different access points without fail.

6. SMS messages. It arranges them into threads, not the traditional way, so you get a large jumble of sms, which can take a while to scroll through.

I admit I'd like the option to arrange them the normal way, however it's quicker to look up something that a specific person has said because it's all in a single thread.

7. MMS messages. If you get a MMS message from someone, the only way you can see what they have sent you is to save the file to the memory card and connect the device to a pc or if its a picture, you can view it in the album app. Otherwise you just get a black screen.

Haven't experienced this myself, have heard of others with the problem though and I believe it's been dealt with in the update.

Keep the prediction on and just add any new words to the dictionary, then next time you don't have the problem of it suggesting other alternatives. It's only an extra tap away to pick a word out of the small list it provides...

Again, haven't had this happen. Only time I've had something remotely like this is hitting send whilst it's still got a suggestion list up. Send seems to also act as a way of choosing the highlighted word in the list.

Small update in the next week or so and a larger one in september. Just hold out :)
In the mean time, my 5 year old W950i beats it hands down on just about every aspect other than screen size.

As with every phone there are going to be little niggles here and there when they're first released. Thankfully HTC are listening to these problems and coming up with fixes for them (mainly via the xda forums it seems - phone nerd central!).

The Hero isn't as polished as it could have been at release and there are simple options missing that are so obvious it makes you wonder if it was pure accident that they were left out, rather than a choice.

A big update in september coinciding with the US release of the phone will have it running close to perfect, of that I have no doubt.

I stopped reading here.
Why spend more for things you don't want

And I was also under the impression that it was customary to disregard everything a phone salesperson tells you anyway :p

The name " Sales People" says it all to me they are there to sell you something you don't really need, if you was after a phone just for basic stuff like text/calls i can't see why you would bother with a Android smart phone, you would have been better of with a basic function phone like a W995 SE, easy to use with very few features.

People buy iphones/android phones for a reason they want to mess with just about everything to do with the phone and want a feature packed phone with a market place to make it come alive rather than be stuck with a limited phone.

Have you considered that one of the other Hero threads on this forum is 34 pages long and no one else has the same problems other than a bit of lag (already fixed in an update due inside a week). That its not the phone, it's you?

It seems strange to buy a smart phone when all you want is to do phone calls and sms.

My wife sends me mms all the time and I can view no problems, I can easily bring up the on screen keyboard while on the phone (why would you not want it to go off when it is next to your ear??? Not sure I want to randomly do touch screen things with my ear...).

And since when did TasKiller require you to root your phone? I am more surprised you didn't moan about battery life.

Wooo, hostile aren't we. I bought it because I didn't want an Iphone and I thought if I'm going to get a phone I want a half decent one.

I must admit I haven't found out how to alter the length of time it takes for the screen to go black, but then neither have hundreds of other people either when searching the internet.

Jbod, what on earth are you on about? Yes, of course it must be me causing the phone to be an absolute pile of **** I couldn't care that there are 34 pages, these issues affect me and a hell of a lot of other people. You know, the people who exist outside ocuk? You might like to try real life once in a while. I must have a totally different phone to you then because hitting any button on a call disconnects it.

As for taskiller, well I don't know about that, just the myriad other task killers which tell you to root your phone, so thats what I did.

Why would I moan about battery life, its a given that modern phones need charging every day? Your snide remarks are neither helpful or welcome.

The Hero is an iPhone competitor, if you didn't want an iPhone why on earth did you get a Hero? One of the main things about these smartphones is their internet connectivity features, if you just wanted a phone then you could have gotten a bunch of other perfectly adequate ones for far cheaper.

Lets stop biting everyones heads off, shall we please - and I'm not picking sides in that statement.

1. Deliberate - iPhone does this too. Does one of the buttons turn the screen back on? That's what I do with my (admittedly rather old) HTC phone.

2. Sounds like something to be fixed in an update. Bluetooth has always caused me problems so I can't say I'm surprised.

3. My two-year-old phone does this too and a lot of people (including me once I figured out what it was doing) love it. I'd be quite impressed if a contact's name matched another contact's number.

4. Don't overload the home screen - especially with social networking stuff. Getting rid of the twitter app and putting contacts into a live folder should help a lot.

5. Most likely you've got a router that the phone doesn't like. Try a firmware upgrade on the router and/or different security settings.

6. It's an iPhone competitor, so it competes with iPhone features. This is one of those.

7. Probably a setting somewhere, or the way the MMS was sent.

8. I believe the first entry in the list should be what you typed. Select it. It's in the dictionary now. Done.

All smart phones have their idiosyncrasies like this. iPhone does. Android does. WM does. No doubt the Pre will. If you wanted a basic phone then there are much better options than a smartphone (and that includes better 'half decent' phones).

Personally I couldn't be happier with mine. I had to arrange the home screen with widgets that aren't processor/memory hungry in order to stop it slowing down; since I did this it always runs smooth as silk. Having said that, I am looking forward to the update so that I can make the home screen look more fancy though.

Regarding the screen blacking out during a call - I noticed this when I had to phone up orange for the first time and it's easily sorted by, if I can remember correctly, pressing the 'phone'(left most) button which lights the screen up then tapping the lower left on screen button to bring up the dialer.

As for the wireless - Some routers don't like the Hero. Mine didn't and wouldn't let it connect to WiFi at all until I updated the routers firmware and now it runs fine.

Text prediction is fine - As others have said, you simply need to teach the phone new words. I have had to 'teach' every phone with prediction that I've owned.

It does seem like you were conned into buying something that you simply do not need tbh.

"Never ask a barber if you need a haircut"

I hate phone salespeople.

I take offence to that! ;)
But i know some salepeople ought to be shot as they either a. Dont know about the products they are selling or b. driven too much by money and push sales where they not needed or nessessary!
Anyways there is some of us that do it for the love of mobiles and geeky things and enjoy playing with our hobbies all day long!! :p

Edit, oh the Hero is a good phone, maybe try playing and killing some widgets, taskiller as already stated is a good app to leep memory under control.
If your still not happy after the update HTC have planned i would your phone is wrong for you personally and proabably flea bay it and buy ones thats more suited and some drinks with the cash!

It is a bit annoying the screen locks when on a call. The handset needs a proximity sensor. Have do the double click on menu button to bring back the dialler.

a. Dont know about the products they are selling

Ain't that ever the truth. If I believed one Orange shop salesmen, the Hero has a teflon-coated screen. Yes, you did indeed read that right.

This is why I now ask salesmen if I can take over and drive. Having said that, I ****ed off one of the O2 guys by getting an iPhone into a mode I couldn't get it out of, but I promised the guy I'd fix it and ten minutes later I did just that.

app called shake awake is on the market, moving the phone during a call keeps the screen on.

Thanks for the heads up, just got it. I never had a problem with the screen going blank, just thought 'Oh', and pressed the far left phone book button to wake up the screen and reveal keypad..
