me and a mate are looking for a short week end break to amsterdam very soon. We dont mind where we stay for the few nights, is there a place that anyone here recommends? we will most likely be drinking rather than sight seeing!:D

It depends what your budget is. There's a hostel in the centre of town called Shelter City that I'm going to be staying at in about 2 weeks. It's £20 a night and that includes free internet access and a hot breakfast. When I was looking for accommodation The Cornerhouse was recommended to me by a few people but I've had difficulty getting in touch with them. I recommend you visit Hostelworld.com and Priceline.co.uk. The latter gives you the option to name your own price. You can get some great deals there. I booked two nights in a 4* hotel for £46 a night when it should've cost me around £160.

i dont understand why you would choose somewhere to go without any idea of what to do or where to stay there first?

? To be spontanious?

When I went to Berlin for my 21st I didn't have any specific plans, I just went there with another mate and we did random stuff as it came along, tourist stuff or random bars.

I absoloutely hate holidays where everything is planned down to a tea....it's a holiday for God sake, not a chore :p

So does that mean you think prostitution is acceptable?

well what is unacceptable about it ? they are paid well. they do it by choice. they are constantly tested. why shouldnt those women/men be allowed to do that job if they choose to ?

Is this a thread about morals and opinions or things to do when in amsterdam, i forget? ;)

a few mates have been without much planning and had a great time, i dont think you should plan too much, maybe do a quick google for the odd thing you might want to check out, but tbh no one i know that has gone did that and they all had a great time and came back wishing they had longer there. just get over there and go with the flow tbh.

When i went i printed a map with coffeeshop locations and good places to be. Dont forget to go to the weed museum.

For accommodation i didn't look we just ended up asking around and found a good place.

Just be careful of pickpockets. And lock ur bags if possible when walking with them etc.

There are women working in the Red Light District that have been trafficked, some are under age. Whether they do it by choice is up to debate. Some would say that all prostitutes are forced into the job. Not necessarily by pimps or abusive partners but by circumstance or as a result of upbringing/trauma. One of the reasons that the Amsterdam authorities want to reduce the size of the RLD is to deal with organised crime and the pimps (I think they call them 'boyfriends' or something similar).
