I had my first attempt at star trails tonight in preparation of getting my competition entry sorted later this week. Just wanted to do a test as the stars tonight were incredible (benefit of living in the countryside! :))

A single hour long exposure. I couldn't see the power cables when I set up, I forgot they were there :p

Apart from setting the shutter speed it was a bit of a point and shoot really.

C-C welcome.

@ ScarySquirrel

How did you manage to do a 1 hour exposure? Did you use an ND filter?

I tried this in my back yard but there was too much light pollution, even with just a few street lamps near by.

I'm going to have to drive out in the sticks and find a nice secluded spot when the sky is clear. The tricky part is finding a decent foreground object that isn't near any lights etc.

You basically need to be in a field in the middle of nowhere, I just tried a little way from my house (about 200 feet from the nearest light and got nowhere with it).

I didn't use a filter. I live out in the middle of no where so it is pretty much pitch black the moment you step out of the front door. I only recently moved here and I was amazed by the stars I could see.

I'm off out tonight to do a proper one, probably do 6 x 10 minute exposures, or 12 x 5 minute exposures.

From a shoot yesterday, most of the shots from which I ****ed up!!!

Nice star trails ScarySquirrel, I need to find the time to go back out and do a long exposure. Just need the sky to clear up a bit first as well:(.

Thanks dude. Overall it was a disastrous shoot! I had no ideas for poses or anything (this is really letting me down at the moment) and I STUPIDLY messed up my settings, in an attempt to get a lighter background I was using a stupidly show shutter speed, which on the camera LCD, looked fine (I didn't zoom in to check) but when I got home realised that it had rendered 90% of the shots unusable!?!

Even the above is a little soft! I have a couple more to process which should be ok though, one of which has a quite spooky and 'enchanted forest' feel to it, which is quite cool.

Nice effort with the star trails (if you havent already tied, try deleloping them in 'tungsten' instead of 'As shot' this tends to darken any light polution)

SS Nice shot of Helen ... as usual ;)

I had another go with my extension tubes yesterday, im getting better, but the focus area is so small :( shot 200 shots and had 1 good one. Is this the same with dedicated Macro lens, the focus area a mean?

Also had this happy accident, i set my tripod up and cable release to try and capture some insects, but the flowers were blowing around quite a lot in the wind. I set my camera to continous mode to try anyway and got this, which i quite liked.

Yeah unfortunately - the only real way around it is to use a macro flash type setup or put your flash on a TTL extension and use a diffuser then set your aperture a bit narrower to get more depth of field. I need to find some bugs somewhere that aren't flies that I have just terminated with fly spray in my home. Living in the middle of London is not all that advantageous when it comes to bug shots.

Now to be honest I'm getting a bit concerned about you mr squirrel. first off, another lovely shot of the lovely helen, but for a woman that you're just starting to date you've got an unusual way of 'taking her out', first to a deserted mental asylum and then to the middle of a wood! Are you a serial killer? :p

I hope you paid for the dry cleaning on her dress after getting her to sit down in the middle of the wood!

hehe, she did actually ask as we walked through the woods "Are you just taking me somewhere secluded to rape me?"

She wasn't on the floor long as a spider went up her dress so she refused to sit down again! :p
