would like to beef up my gfx preformance in the near(ish) future an was wondering which would be a better use of my money... if i bought a 4890 (£160) then i could transfre my non stock HS (vortex neo) and hope to clock it a bit, or, i could get the powercooler 4850 1Gb for £80 (+£15 for a second vortex)

which will give me he best performance upgrade in games like crysis?

NB ive also heard you can run a 4850 and a 4890 in crossfire, this work well or not?

thanks in advance!

Well seeing as new cards will be out in a few weeks you have 2 options IMO:

a) Wait for RV8xx, sell off 4850 and grab a new 5850/5870 :)
b) Wait for RV8xx, sell off 4850 and grab a used 4890 cheap off the MM

tbh the 4850 is a gr8 little performance card but it does struggle abit when it comes to some games so id sell it off and buy a 5870/5850. thats what im doin and iv got 2 4850s =) in l4d i went from 120fps to 170fps but in other games i get from 60 down to 55 which rly sucks for P2P

Get a 4890 much better to run a single more powerful gfx card is the usual advice, also if you tried to crossfire a 4850 & 4890 (or 4870) then it would run at slower speed I believe (not 100% though so maybe someone more knowledgeable can confirm or shoot me down in flames)

I'd go with option (a) :-)

Hopefully you won't have long to wait...

I don't know. If you read My write up that I did just yesterday, I've compared my Xfire crysis results with some reviews for a 4890 and for what I tested the 4890 comes out as good as two 4850's.

But I suppose you could look at it as the motherboard only being x16/x4 rather than x16/x16 or x8/x8.

I'd stick with a single 4850 until some actual pc games come along that require more. Can't think of many pc games that struggle on a 4850 apart from the obvious crysis and arma 2.If you play those everyday then go for the upgrade personally only games I play everyday are fine maxed out on a 4850.
