Got my first ever camera (let alone dSLR) on 18th August and have been experimenting since. So only a week, but i'd rather not carry on bad habits etc :)

I would much appreciate your comments, advice on ways forward etc on my photos to date (my more recent ones i like, but there are a few out of second page items i do like)

if that is your first few weeks of photography you should be very proud as you have a great eye

You clearly have a good eye for composition and you're certainly doing the right thing by getting out there and snapping away, and posting here (and Talk Photography) asking for advice.

I mentioned on TP that I really liked the 'Private' sign photo, and the cow shot.

'Sunset + Cows Natural' is also a fantastic shot, I would be very proud of that now, let alone after one week of having the camera. One thing you could improve though is I would personally Photoshop out the vertical pole coming from one of the cows. Should be nice and easy to do.

I've got you as a contact on Flickr so I look forward to seeing your progress :)

EDIT: Get yourself in some groups on Flickr as well, add your photos to them so you get more exposure and more feedback :)

So far i have the idea "shoot some stuff, find a few groups corresponding to the type of shot, add your photos into each one, wait for views and comments" rinse and repeat.

Also, thanks very much for the composition comment. :D

Yeah that is pretty much what I do. At the moment I am mainly doing portrait photography so I find myself adding to the same groups over and over.

I wonder why you're mainly doing portrait photography ;)

I'm still a n00b at Flickr. What's all this about adding you pics to groups?

There are thousands and thousands of groups which people have created for various things. From specific cameras, to lenses, to black and white photography, to photography of specific places or events.

You can join them, add your photos to them which go into a group pool (most put a limit on how many you add per day), each group has it's own discussion board.

It's really useful for inspiration, feedback, discussion and exposure of your photography :)

Cheer for the info. I've just been searching and found 3 groups my shots fit into. Was wondering why I'd not got many views, no I know :)

Yeah it's a great way of getting views. There are a lot of groups which require you to post comments on other peoples photos when you post your own, so make sure you read the group rules when you join :)

I've had a look through your photos and they are indeed amazing shots. I have still yet to know anything about lighting/flash/strobist etc. I had looked into a SB-600 later on down the line, but i don't have much need for it until i find my style.

EDIT** Oh btw, what camera do you shoot with? the propertiest/camera details are absent on your flickr images.

Have you upgraded to the Pro account?

Oh, i should say - Pro account helps too. It makes your images appear more frequently in search results, or so i'm told.

I upgraded to pro within last couple of days as stats are great and the upload limit is really low for photos that are 5MB or so in size.

Thanks dude.

I use a Canon 400D with battery grip.

I only got into the strobist stuff about 8 months ago, I did a few months reading and learning then started putting it into practice 6 months ago, only did my first shoot with a person about 2 months ago though.

Yup :)

Just upgraded :)

What size pictures do you upload? I've been resizing to 1024 or there abouts.

I usually upload the original size unless I don't want people to see any imperfections :p

If you upload the full size can people see these? I thought they're all resized by Flickr?

Non pro = small, medium and large sizes

Pro = small medium, large + original

So yes, if you upload full size and you are pro, they can view the original.

Awesome. I had considered a battery grip for christmas, but i don't find myself shooting vertically all that often.

Don't get it just for that mate, it holds additional batteries so you can shoot for longer, and it makes the camera a much better shape, it just feels so much better in the hands, with the added benefit of being able to shoot easily in portrait on top.

One of the best things I got for my 400D.

Cool. I'm going to continue as I am for now until I get better lol.

I've thought about getting one for my 40D but decided not too as the battery lasts long enough and I have 3. I don't tend to struggle shooting vertically and as you don't do that many, yet!

Nearly all my shots are portraits, and i've never had the need for a battery grip, i think my camera is more than comfortable enough, personally, i'd get a flash gun or a new lens before a grip, just buy a spare battery pack instead of a grip at first
