As the title says, I'm after something that will strip paint from the wooden bannister that our 16 fingered previos owner painted. It's been stained with varnish but there's quite a lot of paint under the rail which you can see. Anyone recommend me an off the shelf product so I can get rid of the paint and then I'm going to varnish it all again.

Heat gun thingy ?

Can't remember what the proper name is, but I've spent many weekends stripping door frames with this :)

Go out and get your self a tin of paint stripper.

That seems to strip paint quite nicely :)

there's something that's just hit the shops, it's incredibly cheap but can damage the item in question if uncontrolled or used irresponsibly.

it's being advertised as "fire" strange name, but there ya go >.<

otherwise, b&q it ;)

Any chemical paint stripper suitable for wood will suffice. Ask at your local DIY store.

It should remove the paint with no problems and varnish can then go on to the natural wood.

Heatgun and a paintscraper would be my choice but a chemical paint stripper might be easier - I've never used them though so can't be certain which ones are worth recommending.

I'm assuming you mean the handrail, which technically isn't the banister. If so, then fashion some crude shorts from fine sandpaper and go sliding.

this !

careful with it though. it hurts if you get a splash on skin and dont realise at first

Tingle you mean, I been through gallons of the stuff in a former job getting toner off the walls of chemical spray tanks etc...

Some rather interesting replies here (WoW must be down :) ), gone and bought some nitromors stuff so will give that a go tomorrow.

heatguns suck they are good in theory but in reality they take to much effort

nitomorse works really well i recently stripped a wooden door ledge with it right down to the wood and sanded the wood slightly, the wood looked like it had never ever been painted after :) (and no heat gun scorch marks :P )

I've got this (a handrail that's fallen foul of a spastic decorator) and I just wonder at the type of person that would fail to remove the handrail before painting.

Was gonna remove the handrail myself but it looks like it's been screwed to the wall and then glued in place. Seeing as it's only attached to plasterboard it would probably do too much damage if I took it off.
