Hi all,

When driving pretty fast, ie. down the motorway I am hearing a high pitched whistle coming from my front driver's side wheel on my mondeo mk3.

If I then slightly steer left or right I don't hear it. So it only happens in a straight line. It doesn't happen at lower speeds neither and also doesn't happen when I apply the brakes. It sounds like the old fashioned stove kettles when they've boiled....

Any ideas what this may be ?

Sounds like a wheel bearing to me

That was what I thought but I'm no expert on these matters - can this cause much damage if not dealt with quickly?

The thing is it happened a while ago, but I hardly ever drive fast in a straight line - lots of curved roads where I live which are lower speed roads too...

But because I don't hear it all the time it means I forget it's there and so it's been pushed out of my mind pretty much as soon as I get home or whatever.

If it is a wheel bearing how much would I be looking at to get replaced inc. parts and labour ? Thanks.

Not a huge amount, the noise will probably get worse before anything bad happens.

Jack up the side of the car the noise is coming from and see if theres any play in the wheel.

My car makes (also a mk3 mondeo) a similar noise occasionally at low speed, but thats a slightly warped brake disk and goes away when braking.

The bearing's about £37 from euro car parts, a garage would probably be able to get it a bit cheaper. Then an hour's labour, so the same again maybe?

likely to be wheel bearings, seems to be a common problem with mk3 mondeos and a few have gone on mine - more of a drone than a whistle though

When mine started doing this it was down to part of the calliper being seized. The local indy sorted it out when it was in for a service and I've not had a problem since.

Was that at higher speeds too? I thought a brake problem would show up at lower speeds

Could be the pads squeaking against the disk. You could try some copper slip on the shims on the back of pads. Obviously do not get any copper slip anywhere near the friction surfaces.

Hmm fair enough - mine's at about 20mph but I guess every problem's different.

smr - Try gently dabbing the brakes and see if the noise goes away then. If it does its brake related, if not its the bearing

£37 for a bearing is criminal. Check your Yellow Pages for a local bearing supplier. All bearings come in standard sizes and they should be able to provide one for a fraction of the cost.

Im pretty sure Mk3 Mondeos bearings come complete as a hub aassembly it could just be the rears im thinking of though.
