Ok you persuaded me... Im attempting to build a gaming rig. Advice needed.

By building it bit by bit i mean over a few months. 2... 3 at the very most. And at the end of the day im after a quad core with a good graphics card and 4GB of RAM. I know that tech moves on every month but i dont intend to build the best rig out there or anything, just a nice powerful computer that can run current gen games on med/high.

I'd get a DX11 card though, or wait for it to come out and get a current gen card cheaper.

The 4870 1GB will cope with 1440x900 without issues. For the time being at least - may have to start turning graphics down later on but it will keep pace for a good year or so.

Although no1 mentioned anything about getting dual GPUs before Mal, its seems worth mentioning that there is no real problem with them stability wise and more and more games are supporting them. Im not suggesting you should go for one but dont rule it out as a bad idea.

if i can get two GTX 295s for less than a single GTX 300 next year, then i'll do this.....because twin 295's will be more powerful....

but, will the GTX 295 drop in price that far by next may/june ?...........well, we'll have to wait and see....because it'll have to drop to about 150 quid..... my guess is it wont drop that far !

how expensive will the GTX 300 be ? well it'll be about 350 to 400 quid

i'm in no rush to build new rig, my current rig is now working great! ............... but i dont this new build carrying on past next may or june or i'll go flipping crazy!

Thats pretty off-topic, but Im running quad SLI atm and there are very few games that will utilise it. You would be better getting two GTX385's than two 295's. My Quad SLI comes into its own when Im running multiple screens with graphics intensive programs on each.

With a single 19" Widescreen @ 144x900 there's no need whatsoever for SLi as far as I can see.

I'm still powering my 19" WS with an 8800GT, and not finding much that scares it. Plays Crysis (albeit modded with CCC) perfectly well, the odd slight jerkiness in the 2 most demanding sections but that doesnt justify another £150 to upgrade to a new card.

I'd recommend a 4890 or GTX275, still gives plenty of power but not too much overspend.

that's what i've got too, but i'm viewing on a 55'' 1080p screen and i can tell you right now that this card isn't nearly powerful enough nowadays...yes i can view Crysis/ fallout 3 but the framerates are quite low/ jerky/ laggy... all modern games are like this.

it was ok 1.5 years ago, but this jerkiness/ lag is also due to my old CPU as well..... my old rig works well in regards to reliability, but on any modern game released in the last year, it's too slow.

in fact, i only noticed that it was too slow at the start of this year, i thought ``this pc is a bit old..... this is the 3rd game that it's struggling with, it's time for a new pc``

my old rig will be fine for up here surfing the web/normal computing... it'll be ok for the next 10 to 15 years...but not for gaming
