Anyone know of a good web resource for fish ID?

I've just got back off my travels and I've got about 100 pictures of fish that I want to ID. I know about 20 of them and the type of a few more but not the exact species.

I've had a quick look but the majority seem to be links to books. The sites I have found seem to be fairly advanced and you already have to know the group and it specifies the exact species. With some of the fish I don't have a clue so I don't know where to start!

Thanks.

At the risk of appearing a spammer pimping my own site, you could try the Practical Fishkeeping forums. There's a fish identification forum there and we have some very knowledgeable members including several fish taxonomists (who describe fish species for a living).

Where have you been?!

How are you associated with PFK?

Thanks for you reply.

I've just had a look on your website and seen the ID forum. I will have a gander through it in a bit more detail later. Already scanning through the different forum names I have never heard of any of those fishes!

The pictures are from a mixture of places. I have a few from Vietnam (Nha Trang), Thailand (Ko Tao), Australia (GB Reef), but most are from Fiji (Yasawa islands).

I'll post up a picture or 2 of the weirdist fish I've got in a sec.

Ill be able to id all the fish from koh tao, i spent 3 months training to be a divemaster there recently. Should have a fish book lying around someone.

This is a juvenile Harlequin Sweetlips isn't it?

This is a familiar colouration but I don't think it's the same species is it, or is it a very young one?

Sorry for the poor quality, unfortunately most of the pics were taken while snorkeling so it's a lot harder to 1, get close, and 2 stay steady!

No idea... Oh, no. That's a deer with no eyes. What do you call a fish with no eyes?

Nice pictures. From a quick look, I'd say they were:

1. Corythoichthys spp., Pipefish
2. Canthigaster valentini, Valentini puffer
3. Pomacanthus semicirculatus
4. Synodus cf. variegatus, Lizard fish
5. Oxymonocanthus longirostris, Orange spotted filefish
6. Plectorhinus chaetodonoides, Harlequin sweetlips juv.
7. Plectorhinus picus

Interestingly, I think, the Valentini puffer you snapped also has a mimic in these waters. It's a filefish and looks virtually identical.

Any Betta pics?
As in better quality picture of these fish? I f so, no. Fraid they're the best I could get, they were taken from a fair distance so these are quite zoomed in. If you're after other fishies I have some more but not as interesting as this lot!
