Hi,

Just got my gaming system back up and going after some hardware issues, was thinking about overclocking my i7 920 to around maybe 3.2ghz nothing outrageous. My motherboard came with a program called EasyTune6, basically looks like you're overclocked with the click of a button. Looks too good to be true and I'm betting it is, I'm sure it has some auto settings on it and I heard it isn't the best to run a lot of things on auto for overclocking.

Have any of you used it or would give an opinion on using it? If it is a bad idea to use ET6, could anyone give me some tried settings they've had success with to get a 920 to 3.4ghz? Let me know thanks, my spec is below:

Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5
CPU - Intel i7 920 D0
Cooler - Akasa AK-967
RAM - Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 (1600MHz)

What a guy :) I mean I've been on the internet a very long time and that's possibly the most informative reply I've ever seen, congratulations good sir your good deed is done for today. You may now rest.

*Sigh* As with another post in this forum, this was meant in jest but with a serious undertone.

Every time a post asking for overclocking advice like this, a cute furry animal dies...

Overclocking genuinely is incredibly simple in principle, and the Overclocking Sticky really does make it even easier.

On that note, however, everybody will have slightly different systems (components may be similar, but electrical supply, ambient temperature and use will vary wildly) and therefore what will work on one system will not work on another.

As a very, very basic principle, the i7 applies a multiplying factor to its BCLK (base clock) value. As such, your i7 is languishing at a BCLK of 133MHz, using a multiplier of 20.

When armed with the knowledge endowed by the Overclocking Sticky, to what do you think you'd need set the BCLK in order to get your i7 to 3.2GHz?

Dont use EasyTune mate, it is garbage..

You should o/c from the BIOS, instead of using software in Windows.

There are plenty of guides around the net that explain everything that you need to do to overclock your rig via the BIOS.

3.2GHz should be a walk in the park to acheive.

Catch a man a fish, feed him for a day.

Learning to type into google will do you far more good in the long run. This is hardly a difficult question to search for.

I actually have it clocked to 3.2ghz now, I had read the sticky (a few times infact) and used google. Just very new to this so I guess it was more about reassurance more than anything, last time I checked i7's weren't cheap incase something goes wrong. Anyways, cheers for the um..help. I'll prime this for a while and run a few games we'll see what happens, if it anything goes wrong I'll be sure to use the shiny search button.

ps. DavyBoy cheers for the opinion on EasyTune was looking at a few forums were ppl had said they overclocked using it, I've done it through the BIOS so hopefully all will be fine.

So much of it is trial and error that offering a list of settings really doesn't help. Asking for such a list occasionally gets the response of 'google it' because it implies you don't realise this.

Easytune is pretty crap, but not as bad as software used to be. I think you'll get quite a long way just adding vcore when needed, it's when that doesn't help or temperatures get out of hand that we'll be more useful.

I hope you have few things set to auto and are monitoring temperatures with the poison of your choice, good luck :)

Hey Drunzer, what temps are u getting?
I have managed to get my system o/c to 3.2GHz had to lower the Vcore and change the other voltages off auto as my system was over-volting! Cannot seem to get past 3.2GHz because of temps!!! (Not had chance yet to re-fit the cooler).

Well, I may have found a winner. I'm currently running at 3.4ghz, it ran fine in Prime95 for 3 hours no errors or warnings.

Idle Temps - Between 35 Degrees & 40 Degrees
100% Load Temps - Between 69 Degrees & 73 Degrees

Doesn't get that hot when I'm playing games though, think I'll stick with my current settings.
