Best Defrag Program for Vista 64bit.

O&O is by far the best mate but it aint free. Couldnt comment on any others as since buying O&O several years ago I've simply kept buying the upgrades.

Does vista actualy need a defrag program? A friend of mine (a computer science major) told me once defragging vista is just a waste of time and isn't actually good for the hdd.

I would think Vista needs defrag just as must as any previous windows OS.

It makes the hard drive work while it defrags but will do a mechanical hard drive no harm. The solid state ones aren't supposed to be defragged though.

I used to run Diskeeper 2009 Pro when i had Vista; was great but not free.

As for defrag duration on a 1TB HDD, I guess that would depend on the amount of files and actual fragmentation present. Difficult to predict for any system.

NTFS will always need defragmentation due to its legacy which was Microsoft being clever in the days of small hard drives when space was precious and performance not considered as important. Splitting files up to save more space on the disk was deliberate!! Linux/Unix only ever use contiguous space for files.

Its a real bummer if you perform backups it takes longer and longer to perform them as the files get more and more fragged especially when you are dealinhg with thousands of small files and constant delitions. A file sever for example.

JKDefrag( mydefrag now?) is what i use, its just a tiny app and does the job, especially when you don't need a fancy interface. I also have Auslogic Defrag installed on one of my pc's.
