37" or 40" 1080P for around £650

If the intended use for a HTPC would you all agree the 1080p screen would be better so you could achieve 1:1 pixel mapping? Or owuld the plasma be better even when it was up-scaling? I'm assuming that text won't look as sharp.

a well known retailer is doing an LG 42LF7700 with 1080p and 100hz with a free blueray player for £799. If you factor in the price you were saving for a blueray player its a great tv for the money. It also has freeset :)

It's an extremely average tv for the money, with the harped on about panasonic plasma being far better for the OP and the usage it will receive ;)

if you can stretch the budget a little further, the panasonics tx-l37v10 is a very nice set, its 1080p dlna certified so will play divx files from a sd card, and comes with a free blu ray player in some stores, plus free 5year warrenty., and viewing lcds are fine now, unlike they used to be.

Sounds good but best price I can find for it is £950.

Where as I can get the X10 with a BD35 Blu-ray player (which plays back MPEG4 too) for about £630.

The LG 42PQ6000 (plasma) can be had for just over £500 including delivery, leaving plenty of budget for a really good blu-ray player.

Edit - god sorry I'm a retard, it's only HD Ready not 1080.

Why pay hundreds more for an LCD set that is inferior to the cheaper plasma. Mindboggling paying all that money just so you can plug a damn flash drive in. Viewing angles of LCDs are better, but the picture still washes out if you move off centre, something that I don't see ever changing.

It doesn't matter, 1080p is one of the last things to consider when buying a tv, unless you sit extremely close or want to use it with a pc.

That seems pretty good value to me. Try and grab a 5yr warranyt if you can (if teh retailer offers it for free). Also check the prices online of buying the 2 seperately, and if buying online use either Topcashback or quidco to see if the store offers a nice incentive.

inferior, sorry but plasma pictures look horrible, far to soft an dull, they mabye better for hd viewing like blurays but only on 40'' an up, anything smaller and lcd wins hands down.

Maybe you should have a look at yourself and consider that you are actually seeing a far too bright, colourful, and inacurate image from an lcd, and the plasma of choice is actually accurate.

And how is a plasma only better for HD viewing with it apparently being soo soft and dull, then suddenly better than an LCD above 40inches.

Very confusing post you have there.

Those are the online prices when buying separate (can buy in their store at this price too), I'll see if a certain retailer can do a price match so I get the 5 year warranty :D

Yup, have a good look around to see what the best deals are. The 5yr warranty from a certain deparment store (that also has a posh supermarket instore) is pretty good and worth considering if their price is right.

I'd be looking at a 40" b650 samsung for about <£700 tbh.

Did loads of research into all of the screens just before getting my own 46" version of this.

Main reason i went for the b650 over the b550 is because it seemed to have much better processing, massively smoother picture to me and its something i'm very concious of and tend to favour plasma's generally because of this.

+1 for Panasonic TXP42X10 plasma.

HD is fantastic and SD is good too. Pic is good even from 5-6ft despite it not being a 1080p screen. Spent ages looking for a new TV and so glad we went Plasma over LCD.
Especially for under £560 with a 5 year warranty!

Why the X10 when the S10 seems to be better btw guys? Genuinelly asking as I'm going through this atm, comparing the X10 and the S10 side by side and the S10 looked better in terms of picture quality and spec?

I don't notice the difference between 720p and 1080p on a 37" at 7-8 feet unless I feed a PC signal into it (desktop, not movies). Plasma looks much more like a traditional CRT in terms of warmth and colours than a LCD.

The only real giveaway between the 2 is the size of the pixels on the screen and being able to seee those. Otherwise during normal viewing it is pretty much impossible.

I still miss CRT tvs though, even the best plasmas cannot beat the motion handling and stunning SD picture they put out :(

Bring on OLED, and from what I saw at Sony BMG in Kensington last week, if/once OLED because mainstream, we are in for a real treat that will relegate LCD and Plasma techs to the scrap heap in a flash.

In theory it should be a better TV as it costs £100-150 more than what I paid for the X10 inc the warranty.
If you can justify the extra cash fo the extra features then go for it.

i got the s10 37" model .. exceptionally good tv

i teh differences bewtween x10 are these

x10 has :-

extra hdmi port
pc input
and also has anti glare panel

the top 2 are not a real issue ... and for me the reflection is not an issue anyway. if you look for it you will find it easy .. but if your lookign and concentraign on what your watching you wont notice. and at night its a non issue anyway as the picture is perfect. and seeign as the 37" model can be had for 399 atm if you look around .... veyr nice

*sigh* apparently 37" is too big as well so they now want a 32", I'm thinking the Panasonic 32x15b (found it for £410 online), obviously not a Plasma as you can't get them at this size or the 32s10.
