Is anyone here a Community Responder?

I've been after a new challenge on the island (already taken on a second position and become a Coastguard), and have been offered this role.

It's a on call 24/7 for 1 week a month. Due to the location, it's quite a hardcore role - dealing with anything and everything, with more serious happenings needing the air ambulance to be called out.

It's unpaid, but I can imagine very satisfying if you help someone successfully.

Any advice/tips/experiences?

Go for it mate, currently in the process of sorting this myself. A few friends are responders, been out a few times with them too, it very interesting and deffo worth the effort.

Have you had any sort of previous experience? The one thing i'm scared of is being afraid of the gore one might encounter! Something I guess you can't really know until you actually get one... has it ever crossed your mind??

You won't be exposed to any gore mate, mainly difficult breathing type stuff until a Paramedic or ECP can get there. Maybe a ressus or 2 but no blood and guts type stuff at all. One thing the operator will be sure to do is not expose you to that type thing mate, or anything for that matter that you may find difficult to deal with. You will be trained in what you need to know and assessed once a year there after to keep you updated. Dont worry mate, if you like to help others and want to make a difference then go for it.

EDIT to Add: Is there a St John where you are mate because this would really help in boosting confidence etc. and wil help train you in more fields of first aid and so on..

T-Rex has escaped from the underground secret nazi facility bunker, go and aprehend it tres. Until the SAS get here, it's all on you. If you bump into the Hitler Clone, make sure to give him a cookie and take him in in handcuffs.

Bad jokes aside, I can imagine it will be very satisfying, be full of old people having breathing problems and arriving first onsite to people who have died. Are you ready to give mouth to mouth to a dying old granny?

Crap mate tbh, you will not be first on scene to someone that has died. Also dont worry too much about giving mouth-to-mouth to an old granny, we use a bag and mask for that ;)
You will be trained to use and AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) and CPR, also medigases such as Oxygen etc. The use of advanced airway management too. Plus various wound care methods.

Not where I live!!!! The 8 co-responders on the island are the first to arrive at ANY medical emergency. There is a paramedic on another island, although by the time they get to the quay and boat over, is usually 20 minutes. Air ambulance is again a 20-25 minute wait to reach us.

Co-responders are first on scene to everything here

Ah right okay, guess things vary slightly from place to place. Anyway mate as I have said its defiantly worth you time and effort. I guess its a case of relying on your training and taking everything one step at a time. I am certain they will NOT be dropping you in at the deep end right from the get go, make sure you pay attention to any training you receive and the golden rule for anything like this is REGARDLESS OF WHATEVER HAPPENS - YOU HAVE DONE YOUR BEST!!!

Best of luck mate, let me know if theres anything I can do to help etc and as above, respect to you for wanting to do this

thanks chief - do let me know how your application goes as well!

I shouldn't have any problem being accepted but atm they are reshuffling the Responder teams in my area because there are quite a few that are registered but are not active, guess they need to weed these out and then I would hope to be part of our local team within the next couple of months

Take Care Mate and Enjoy it
