Hey guys - hope you can help me as I'm at a total loss now :(

My CPU (3800+ with stock cooler) idles at 31C, but when I play any games this steadily rises, and rises, and rises.... and rises to over 80C. Then the computer shuts down.

Restart computer, temperature reaches normal idle of 31C.

I remounted the heatsink 3 times about 2 weeks ago, and the final time it seemed to work - playing games with a peak temp of 55C. Next day its back to the norm with temps over 80C.

The seatsink is always very hot so I would assume its mounted ok - is the fan on its way out?

Cheers!
Chris

does the fan ramp up to a higher speed the higher the load on the CPU?

Not at all. stays at ~3300 RPM.

Asus Q-Fan is Disabled and I'm monitoring everything with SpeedFan. Even with fan speed set at 100% in SpeedFan 3300 RPM seems the highest it want to go.

EDIT: I don't have another HS or Fan to try :(

When you reseated the HSF i guess you cleaned the CPU and put new thermal grease on? Could you have used too much/not enough or the HSF is not attached properly?

Also, do the temps in the BIOS agree with the temps that speedfan and other such programs get as sometimes the programs can be out? (eg idle temps)

Yup cleaned the CPU + new grease on. did that 3 times and the last time it worked - for a day. (temps max = 55C) next day back to high temps. Did the HS unseat itself?

All temps match (BIOS+SpeedFan)

Shall I reseat HS AGAIN?

Im not sure if there is much point, if it didnt work the first few times

The title says it all really, it is very strange

If I leave it temperatures rise to over 90C....

It is socket 939.

Would you recommend reseating again? Surely I would be getting much higher idle temps if it wasn't seated properly?

Is that a A64 3800+ mono core or an A64 3800+ X2 Dual Core?

Either way it shouldn't be running any higher than 65°C full load unless you live in a volcano! :p

What is the voltage reading saying in CPU-z? is the board over-volting the chip like crazy or? (should read approx 1.35v) other than that the heatsink isn't mounted correctly

Right I think the problem is the fan not speeding up to match CPU load. Just played 1 minute of l4f again - temps rose from 28->45 but fan speed stayed at 3300 rpm.

The fan must be rated to over the 3300 rpm its running at - is there a way to get the extra rpm out of it? Would turning on Q-fan work?

I was thinking you probably could get away with just HWMonitor for the mo as that shows everything! :o

It's gotta be Speedfan thats causing the problem?

SpeedFan unistalled, HWMonitor installed. Ran L4D for 5 minutes. Still not happy. :(

Fan speed doesn't increase. The problem is definitely the fan. (?)

The heatsink can't be mounted correctly? core#1 is running 22°C higher at load than core#0 :D

*sigh*

Fine! I'll reseat it for the 4th time in 2 weeks! grrrrrr :p

I must be doing something wrong when seating?
