How much stuff do you have on your PS3 basically? Id say a 16/32Gb is for minimal transfer but thats a guess really...

When I did it in the past I backed up the lot and it was 100Gb - now its probably more like 250Gb :(...

It's backing up your entire hard drive so you need as much as you have installed. What i did was delete everything i could download again, so PSN games, installed games (game data), movies and music. Basically i ensured the only thing left on my PS3 hard drive was my save games and user accounts before i backed up. That way it only took up just over 1GB, before i did this it wanted to use 28GB.

It's worth mentioning that even if you delete the "Game utility" data (e.g. the install files) for things like PS Life, PS Home etc you still need to go to the PS Home icon on the XMB, press triangle, and choose "delete" from the menu..

My backup was a few hundred MB using this technique :cool:

Oh true - sorry, that was in no way a dig at the 360, just a comment on the the quality of the PS3's layout. I took my 60GB PS3 apart the other day (blu-ray failure), but carried on & took the whole thing apart - very impressed with the design.

BTW - it still worked fine when I put it back together!!! (except the blu-ray of course!).
 
I rang up a gaming store and asked if they can match the £198 of a store that Sells, Trades or gives cash for electrical items and they said yes they would. Great. I may just do that. :D

I'll just have to back my harddrive up now and we have a winner.

£52 for a new slim is better than the £140 odd pounds I hear Sony charge to repair 60gb PS3s. That is if Sony will even fix 60gbs anymore. It'll be nice peace of mind.

£198 trade in seems ridiculous - surely the 60GB models can't then be re-sold for much of a profit after that?

Quick look shows that a trade in store sells them on again for £250, £50 is probably already more than they make on a new unit as the profit margins are tiny with consoles. Add to that that the £198 is most certainly store credit, they know they'll be getting an extra £52 when he buys a slim. So basically £100 profit.
 
Hmm...really am tempted to sell my 60Gb. Mine is pretty loud tbh and I rarely use BC. Do you think 60's will still sell for around £250 once the Slim is released? Would be pretty cool to just indirectly swap.

Man, all that for a couple of extra USB ports & backwards compatability!

I've never used BC, so I don't care about that & I've never had more than 2 USB ports in use at once - so I'd go for a slim anytime.

I'm almost tempted to fix the blu-ray & then try trading it for a 'slim' as well.
 
I have a feeling BC will come back in software emulation if Sony wants to sell PS2 games over PSN in the future. I just hope if BC does come back I'll able play PS2 games from original DVDs
 
PS2 software emulation will almost certainly be present in at least the PS4. Part of the reason why we have PS1 emulation is because of the massive difference in power between the PS3 and PS1; quick, simple but inefficient coding is possible as the PS3 can pick up the slack. I reckon the difference in power between the PS2 and PS3 being much smaller is what's holding them back. Coding will have to be more concise and less lazy in order to get the most out of the system.

With the PS4 however the jump in processing power will be a nice big platform to make coding a PS2 emulator much easier.

Or at least, that's what i hope will happen.
 
I sold my PS3 on th'bay for £210 with £14 P&P.

I'd have traded it if I had the chance, but "that store" won't price match as there is no competitor in Swansea. Quite annoying.

Hope the slim ships early now :o
