My businss idea...

calm down guys

and likwid stop stirring. your not exactly offering advice are you,

like i said this is not really the place to be asking, i suggest the OP visit www.startups.co.uk/
and check out their guides and forums,

One of my friends has started his own fortnightly event at a bar called Sneaky Petes in Edinburgh its called "Manky B******" he basically just approached the venue and said, I am wanting to start doing this night, I will do all the marketing etc and they let him do it. They provide the venue and they get money from drink and ticket sales.

So why post a link if you know there is swearys in it?

Its becoming quite successful and has been running a few months now.

I think this is the sort of business you have to do for the love of it. You will likely struggle to break even in the early days so you need to do it to satisfy other requirements beyond profit. Good luck if you decide to proceed.

As with any startup invest your time in solid research before you get going. Just because you would be getting into a "fun" business doesn't mean you shouldn't take research and analysis seriously. Run some sensitivities to see what the worst case is if it is not well received.

You need to begin by making calls to clubs and trying to speak to other promoters (without giving away your perceived niche / gap.) get an idea of the scale of event, fixed and variable costs, the required marketing and associated costs and start crunching some numbers

I am a specialist in feasibility analysis for entertainment orientated businesses and have been for over a decade, if you want real help, you can pay me.:)

Sounds very specific. Bet your job is interesting :D

it is interesting but actually pretty broad: visitor attractions, resorts, arena, stadia and entertainment venues and mixed use real estate anchored by leisure - also help existing businesses in the same spheres

You're kidding me gurdas? I am on the course that replaces yours ITMB... what is your name?

Name is Gurdas, Helen, Rob, Matt, Jane Burns, Jane Walker, they will all know me so give them a hello from me:D

is that even a reputable degree. i mean to go UCL and do a mediocre degree, no offense but what exactly can you do with that

its seems broad. i guess its the equivalent of business management

It's a very reputable degree that has one of the highest levels of graduate employment out of the entire UCL programme list. It is recognised in most top city firms from banking to energy to accounting etc. It covers broad aspects but all ties in for the purpose of someone going into consultancy that will require competent skills in diverse fields to expand possibilities. The fact it's held at UCL means the programme is taught by a range of well connected individuals with high levels of teaching. Where did you study to be able to scoff at someone who went to UCL?

Edit: Most of the friends in my year have gone onto work in banking, consultancy, accounting for companies you would have heard of and they are all starting at around £30k at least. If your aim is to work within those sectors then the course offers great opportunities to do so. So that's the answer to your non offensive "so what exactly can you do with that" :)

well considering its been replaced. doesnt sound good does it.

The course is always updating to keep up with the modern environment so it has always evolved.

Right, I've been an entrepreneur since the age of 12 starting up companies, however over the last 3 years I have stagnated having 0 projects on the go.

The time has come to change all that, and my proposition as of yet is a spate of Trance / Chillout club nights at smaller venues to test the water for the market and it is virtually non-existent!

Anyone here organised events etc? Would be very greatful if you can give any input into the idea.
It's not hard, you're basically going be a promoter.

Book artists, book venue, hire soundsystem, jobs a good 'un!

Top tip: People go to clubs to dance, chillout music is not really ideal, so book some breakcore in room 2 or something! :p

you do realise that you need A-levels and grades to go to university.

lies.

mature students would get in on work experience, and you can get onto all sorts of foudation years with only gcse's and a good interview.

the clearing period also allows people to get onto courses they normally wouldnt have the grades/subjects for.

You have just demonstrated you haven't a clue what you are talking about:p

I don't see a unique selling point here.

I don't see a sound understanding of the business, or indeed any research at all beyond a forum post asking for help.

I don't see anything that would mean he's going to make a good go of this.

Anyone who's made a successful business will tell you that it's all about putting the effort in for a good long time. Even then you never really get any time off because the company needs to be managed.

Unless you know all of the local clubs, all the local promoters and have some insider experience, you're going to get rinsed.

If (and only if) you're willing to put the effort in, it might be a success.

Successful, profit making enterprises dont need to be unique.

I believe the post was his intial request for help on the subject. This is the starting point of his business idea. If he had fully researched the business and was already up and running it would be a little silly for him to post his idea up on this forum...right?

I don't see anything that would mean he's going to make a good go of this.

Yep, shoot him down before he has even started.

Some people need to learn to be more encouraging. When commenting or advising on businesses/projects, its great to offer constructive criticism. What you are doing is not constructive at all.

Not necessarily. Everyone has to start some where and perhaps last night was the beginning of him building up contacts. In this thread, he seems to have aroused the interest of some people who might serve as good contacts.

By your reasoning, virtually no one should go out and create a business for themselves, for the simple reason that other companies are already doing what you want to do and they have already established themselves and have 1000 more contacts than you do.

To anyone starting a business, one very important thing is that you must be passionate about what you do. This will enable you to work on your idea night and day, with seemingly little effort.

You will get lots of people who knock your idea down. These people could be right, but could also be wrong, and you must ensure that you do everything possible to prove them wrong and keep the vision for your business, moving forward.

Successful businessmen generally have a positive (glass half full) attitude and believe so strongly in their ideas that they are able to drive them through. Even when they encounter a problem with their business, they will tend to put a positive spin on it and either solve the problem or work around it.

If you are negative and easily discouraged by people such as Yamahahahahaha, then you may as well give up before you have even started. That goes for any entrepreneur/business person.

Good luck OP and anyone else starting their own business.

All you have to do is look at global gathering... thousands of people, but no where for them to go when the festival isn't on!

I havent read all the thread but in Leeds there are quite a few places to go to. What you do need to create is a gatecrasher in sheffield type place. Amazing sound and lighting and you will attract a lot of people. Also mix it up with some Psy/Goa Trance as these nights are almost not existent. In Leeds there seems to be a sudden influx in dubstep, house was big a year ago with 'Jackin' 'Chunky' and all sorts of other stupid names but seems to be dieing out a bit now

Let me know when you have something setup and I will come and spin fire/glow poi in one of your clubs
