I currently have an 8800GT in my machine, and although it runs all the games I play to an adequate level it is simply far, far too loud.

Could somebody recommend a reasonably priced upgrade, with priority on it being near-on silent?

As above, I would recommend an after market cooler. I had exactly the same issue with my 8800GT - the fan noise was horrible! I bought a Thermalright HR-03-GT and 80mm zalman fan - its now whisper quiet and temps are as much as 10C lower under load. Well worth it if you are happy with the card. :)

A good cooler is gonna cost £20 to £30 so I would just go for the gts 250 at around £100, cant go wrong for the bfg one with 10 year warranty

Its the same card as the 9800gtx+ which is still a good performance card. Then sell the 8800gt.

250/260/275/9800gtx+/4870?
watever u do DO NOT BUY A 4850 you need it on 40%+ fan all the time or it heats up to 70+

Thanks guys, I will have a look at your suggestions. I think I might actually have a bit of a dodgy card - it runs well over 80-90 degrees whenever Im playing any game. I have bought an aftermarket cooler, but tbh.. Im lazy, and could probably do with an upgrade anyway.

Are any certain brands of graphics cards (BFG etc. I mean, not Nvidia/ATI) worth avoiding/looking out for?

Gigabyte SilentCell. They do either a Geforce 9800GT or a Radeon 4850 and these cards are compleatly silent because they have no fans and are just passively cooled.

I would say bfg are the best if you dont want to OC the cards yourself coz of the warranty program.

Since they OC the cards by default I dont find it a problem.
