Can somebody please tell me what is going on. I have always seen new Peugeots as cars that are bought as a run-about for taking the kids to school and picking up the shopping or for young females that want a cute looking and safe car.

All of a sudden though 18 year olds are driving round in them with windows down and music blaring, cruising past Mc Donalds with their mates. Further to this Peugot are even advertising about "driving sexy" with a girl in a showroom who knows nothing about cars getting turned on by the salesman including all the goodies. They even have the domain http://www.drivesexy.com/ ?!?

Is it just me?

Because the insurance premiums for young drivers on anything half decent is ninety billion quid?

Peugeots aren't trendy (and anyone who claims that they are has serious delusions) , they're just cheap to insure for the very reasons you pointed out (Used mostly as girly runabouts).

Peugeot have gone for the old "sex sells" thing for years :/

Remember the "Nice Car" 306 adverts?

People who get right into their "pugs" are completely convinced that they are the best thing since sliced bread. Its impossible to educate them otherwise.

I beg to differ on this subject. During the 80s Pina sombody was the designer of peugeot and the cars had great handling, and great engines , 205, 309 , 405 to name a few, even the 306 has a great chassis. Its pretty crazy to say that its all down to insurance, my 205 gti is insurance group 15 as standard, thats higher than most bmw's audis etc etc.

However cars like the 106 1.1 are ideal for youngsters, they are simple and small, with small price tags and insurance to suit, however a well setup 106 gti is far from slow and very punch for a basic 1.6.

I think the thing about old peugeots and Renaults etc are that even though the build quality was nothing compared to german vw's etc, during the rallying seasons, vw were a long way behind, this was when peugeot were in their prime however and since then things have slipped rappidly.

Yes, but proper Peugeots (205/309/405) don't count as you don't see many youngsters in them.

I've heard the 306 is a great car, but when I was looking for one insurance was a main attraction. Lord knows I didn't desire a 306 D Turbo, but it was an awful lot of car for what the insurance man was asking, compared to something along the lines of a 1.1 Saxo.

Even with my 205, I can't help but think insurance was a factor. I struggle to think of a easily insurable first car that is as quick and is as much fun as a 205 XS (I certainly can't find anything now the time has come to replace it!)

The 206's, including the sporty looking ones (not the 1.6, it's expensive to insure) are fairly common among the people I know who're just passing their tests at the moment.

They're fairly decent as runarounds, and fairly cheap to repair, unless you get one with an O2 SAT failure and don't know what that is... :)

205xs's are great, 85bhp in a super light cool car, on twin choke carb.. :D
