Losing HD space

I hope this is the right place to put this.....

Everytime I log onto my pc these days I seem to be losing around 100mb! I have got updates on my AV, FW and AS software but apart from that anything that i download is put onto seperate drives. I've ran Ccleaner / Tuneup Utilities and after using the net I set it so Firefox clears cache etc so nothing should be left behind yet I still keep losing about 100mb each time i log into my name. Running AV and AS scans generally pic up the odd tracking cookie but nothing more sinister so I'm at a bit of a loss as to why this space is disappearing :confused:

any ideas?

winsxs? One of windows more ridiculous features and currently hogging about 20gb of my drive and it increases all the time.

I'll have a look at that tomorrow as I'll only be at home after work for 5 mins before going out for the football and wont be back till around midnight.

Is it safe to delete / remove some of the stuff associated with that folder without damaging the file integraty?

I'm hoping it's less severe in Windows 7. I'm sure it's got worse in Vista though, I've only really noticed it over the past few months.

Ok I'm confused now. I've just had a look in that winSxS folder and its only 25.8mb worth of stuff but yet again I'm logged in and my C: drive is now down to 67.8Gb :confused:

What on earth is going on?!?!

buy an old 20gb hard drive for about £2. It will last 100 days, bargain!

VSSADMIN LIST SHADOWSTORAGE

have you tried deleting all bar the last system restore copy, and see how many GBs of space it gives you back?

Just had a look on tuneup utilities 1 click maintenance and under that it says i can save 1gb of info. theres a few .hdmp files which although aren't huge (around 20 - 30mb each) do seem to be taking up space in one of the temp folders. That may be the reason for the loss of space I guess. :confused:

Haven't checked to see if I've got system restores on or not

Had the same WINSXS problem on Vista 64 bit. I thought it was virus coz it got so bad. I'm talkin 30-40 gigs..

this is beginning to become a joke now. after settling for a short while it started losing 100mb again each day i logged in. now today it got beyond a joke. my C: drive lost 1Gb overnight from 68.8 to 67.8gb! :eek:

ran ccleaner and tuneup and recovered 300mb from temp files but how or where is this space going?

Will download that space sniffer to see if that can shed some light onto things

Just ignore that now. found out what the problem was. it was the size of my pagefile.sys it was sitting at 1.9gb and when i checked the setting it was between 2 and 4 gb so reduced it right down and now back up to 69.6Gb free on the C: drive :rolleyes:

Thanks for this. I just checked mine and it's something ridiculous -

Used: 43GBs
Allocated: 45GBs
Maximum: 104GBs

Soon changed that to a max of 25GB.s
