What kind of bug is this

Was at work today and this beasty decided to land on my head, scared the life out of me when i saw the size of the sting he was armed with, never seen anything like this before, any idea what it is?

Havent got a 10p at hand, so trying to think of the size of it...but it kind of looks a bit like a small hornet to me, hard to say with a picture from the side though.

You wanna watch those, they'll crawl in your ears while you sleep at night and lay eggs in there. The larva will then proceed to eat into your brain.

I think it might be a female Wood wasp. They have a very long ovipositor (for laying eggs) which looks like a massive sting. They're actually harmless though.

Definitely a wood wasp, it's a female with it's egg ovipositor sticking out.
