new ati on sep, nvidia lowing prices??

anyone here believes or have read anything that suggest that nvidia video cards will decrease the price a few bucks when the new ati cards are released?

i think nvidia will be concentrating on their 300 series, but maybe. if ati cards are outperforming nvidia cards and at a gr8 price then nvidia are in trouble!

Dont think nvidia can reduce there prices much more on the 2xx cards, they lost a lot of partners in the last set of cuts as they couldnt make money. ATI have a chance to make a killing untill the 3xx cards come out.

Yeah i am not sure nvidia has that much room for further reductions on the price of their cards not sure but i thought they were already selling some at a loss now.

Its not about making profit, its about making smaller losses.

100k 285gtx's sold at £175, is better than 100k 285gtx cards sat on a warehouse floor unsold

Once they are made, they are made, that cost is gone and unrecoverable, the next step is to get what you can for the card, but its better to get something, than nothing.

Nvidia will have to cut the price or go for another shameful, renaming shaft-O-thon.

I hope ATI have the 5 month lead everyone thinks, it might mean the plums running Nvidia get the boot and someone gets the time to turn the company around before its too late.

No point speculating until we see what the new ATI cards can do, how much the cost, and how readily available they are.

Rumours were rife a couple of years back about the all-conquering HD2900 that was on the way, Nvidia were gonna have to slash their 8800 series prices, but it never really came to that.

Unless they have more brainwashed followers than first thought, or the new ATI cards turn out to be slower than expected the choices are,

Release faster cards
Drop prices and run at a loss for a while
Hibernate

But we are talking Nvidia, they may go on a magical mystery tour.

My guess is, Nvidia will release/ accidently leak some info about the up coming 300 series to put doubt in peoples minds about jumping on the 5xxx series cards. It'll be enough for many to think "I'll wait and see" compare the Nvidia offering to the ATI before buying a DX11 card. Besides, I doubt there will be many if any dx11 stuff out for a while after Win7 is released, so the 5xxx becomes mainly an exercise in higher frame rates on dx10 games.

Thinking about it, they may actually put their prices up, as they are re-releasing their GT200's with Dx10.1 aint they, and you know what they are like, a single number change on the heatsink sticker, the box, and a slight overclock is an excuse for them to whack £100+ extra on.

Speak of the Devil.

After hearing from multiple sources spanning on several continents, we can be fairly certain that the samples of nVidia's first DirectX 11 GPU are going to depart from engineering labs. Just like GT200, GT300 spent several months in the Labs while the drivers were being created.

Given that today's GeForce drivers contain more code than Windows XP core, we aren't surprised that nVidia is taking time to get the product ready for market. Just like some media were suggesting that GT200 taped out in March 2008 [while some developers got the GT200 cards as early as three months before that tape out story], GT300 needs time [and human resources] to finish the development. GT300 is the base graphics architecture not just for the standard desktop or notebook graphics, but also as a future graphics base for the Tegra generation of products. And with recent rumors of nVidia implementing ECC feature into the GPU [which is a given, since GDDR5 comes with ECC], Tesla parts should be quite interesting as well.

But now, we have received words that AIBs are getting time frames forthe demonstrations to their own partners and press, with the firstevents happening in September. The dates are obviously planned to bluntthe katana-sharp market attack from ATI's Radeon 5000 series.

On nVidia's annual gathering of add-in-board manufacturers [happened a while ago], a lot of harsh words were spoken due to renaming policies, OEM positioning and more importantly, how to combat resurgent ATI - it was stated that a lot is expected from the NV70 e.g. GT300 generation.

Now, the only question is how long it will take for nVidia's demo team and software vendors to create traditional launch demos. ATI dropped the practice with the Radeon 4000 series, showing raytraced Ruby in its Cinema 2.0 event, but the demo didn't became available to general public. All in all, computer graphics arena is never boring.

They might just to clear stock, I dont think any price cut is realistically going to take sales from the 5800s, it will be people who where specifically waiting for a 200 series cut, for SLI etc.
