well there is always a time when you hit jackpot with a newly started airing anime such as bleach, naruto, fma

my question is has anyone found a recent anime that have really become popular.

i dont know about ones that have become really popular, but i watched 'eden of the east' recently an it was brilliant, one of the best i'd seen in along time. 07-ghost is turning out good aswell, no idea how long it will go on for tho :P

i remember when Tenge Toujo and i just started watching it. it was awesome but sadly they didnt go far with it

yeh tenjou tenge rellli good but just a bit short

and ghost 07 defo winner

also try saint seiya the lost canvas think its a good take on the good oldies:D

tbh have you tried a different genre

i normally use www.anime-source.com
to keep check of whats hot :D

I didn't find the story in Tenjou Tenge that appealing really.

Naruto/Bleach has always been my main anime TBH. Fullmetal Alchemist is good!

Tenjho Tenge was not a good series, (and wasn't short ... it was a standard 2 cours in length) ... finally managed to sell my copy the other day. Bleach and Naruto are quite poor and the only thing they have going for them is they sell well as they appeal to the kids who like shonen fighting anime.

Recent anime which was/is good .... K-On! started in April this year and was a great little series and has done very well in Japan with it's OST CDs and merchandise swamping the sales lists on various sites (e.g. Rainforest JP). Eden of the East was good (with films due out starting 4Q 2009 to finish the story), as is Tokyo Magnitude 8.0. Clannad and Clannad After Story, the latter of which finished airing in April, were very good series from Kyoto Animation and have done very well in DVD sales. And of course we had a new series of Maria-sama Ga Miteru starting at the beginning of the year which should hit R1 DVD in Q1 2010.

On R1/R2(UK) DVD releases we have had the first two series of [A certain Undine based gentle animation whose name conflicts with a competitor] from Nozomi, with more due next year, which are very good.

OP, you should have really posted this in the All Things Anime thread.

naruto is fail to the extreme, the storys ok but the setup is rubbish its been a few years since i last watched anime but my god it was bad.

Bakemonogatari
Umineko (This actually means seagull but its direct translation is sea-cat????)
Spice & Wolf

Pop over to anime"love", the post/view count next to the series title is a good indicator of it's popularity.

Anyone watched the Valkyria Chronicles anime that recently started being aired? The characters and story in the game were fantastic, if the anime is half as good i'll watch it.

Yeah I watched the first 4 or 5 eps. In summery it's pretty... un-unique. At worst you could say it's re-hashed tripe.

Give it a watch though plenty of other people seem to enjoy it.

Wash you mouth out with soap sir!!

Bakemonogatari is this seasons best series and Spicy Wolf is a very close second.

ok ok ... I clicked quote on the wrong post .. I meant to click it on one about VC not those :)

OP, given your existing tastes the only series I mentioned you may like is probably East of Eden (you asked what new things we had seen we thought were good not what we recommend to you).

(oh, Sparky__H, you may want to loose that site reference earlier ... I know they have a forum but the main purpose of the site could earn you a holiday .... the OP would probably do better looking at the General Anime section of the (former) Anime on DVD forums on Mania.com).

This needs reiterating.

If anybody in the thread hasn't seen Bakemonogatari or Spice + Wolf, watch them. Watch the hell out of them. Preferably in 720p (damn near a necessity for Bakemonogatari). And then suffer like we are while waiting for the next episodes. :D If you don't think you'll like them, you're wrong.

It really says something about a series if it can become your favourite of all time after just 3 episodes (Bakemonogatari).

I wouldn't quite go that far, both are prety good series but neither threatens anything in my top ten.

For people who haven't seen series 1 of Spice and Wolf then it's released on R1 by Funimation at the end of November.

I would say there's not been anything that good since Ghost In The Shell. Death note comes very very close. I wish they'd make more. Incidentally GITS 2.0 Redux is meant to be good with it's new 7.1 soundtrack.

The v2.0 of the original film is ok although the CG in the open sequence grates a bit much for me. The make over in the rest of the film is quite subtle and makes it match more with the GitS SAC series.

The audio is pretty nice though, (I have the Japanese blu-ray release which has English subs)
