5.1 Gaming via AV Receiver?

Hello,

I’ve got a PC based on the ASUS x38 motherboard hooked up to my 5.1 AV Receiver, I use the on-board sound and get DD or DTS (both 5.1) whenever I watch a suitable encoded film/TV show, I’ve always wondered how I get 5.1 in games but assumed I’d need a card, after reading a little bit about ‘Dolby Digital Live (and DTS Live)’ I’m a little hopeful I can get true 5.1 sound in games, is this the case? if not what solution do you suggest?

I’m upgrading my AV system to a HDMI cable one soon, will my 4870 support multi channel gaming over HDMI?

Any advice appreciated

would suggest that your 4870 would be fine on its own.

I'm not 100% sure though, so if any experts want to confirm I'd be interested to know too, as it might convince me to upgrade my amp.....

You need a soundcard that can convert to DD/DTS in realtime. Its as simple as that.

Thanks sid, is it then simple to make the 4870 output the encoded sound from the souncard?

Thanks both, which ones can do that? might get a cheap one now and upgrade to a TrueHD one in the future
