Sooooo....

He got a complete new PC and didnt have a clue what he was doing. I ordered him all the parts and i bought him the antec 902 case and the i7 overclocked bundle with the gigabyte mobo and patriot ram! Got it set to 4.0ghz and he has a GTX 280.

Built it all last night for him and got Vista 64bit on it.

Got it completely set up with all the drivers etc. Installed speedfan and got prime 95 on there.....

Now get this! Idles at 22c and under stress on prime 95 it gets to 50c max! no more and its deadly quiet! You cant even hear it.

However under prime 95 with 100% cpu usage on all 8 cores it still opens firefox and navigates the whole system so quickly.

100times faster than my Q6600 - 3.4ghz.

Just thought id tell people because if your thinking about the overclock bundle! Its amazing! YOU NEED IT IN YOUR LIFE! Ive already ordered one with that case!!!!

Mate what are you using to cool this, and also what are you monitoring temps with?

There is no way in hell those temps are right, I suspect you are using EasyTune6 to monitor temps, which doesn't give you the actual temps of the CPU cores, try using RealTemp instead and then report back what your temperatures are.. RealTemp reads temps from sensors on the actual CPU cores.

Also, don't forget to set the Tj Max to 100c to get accurate readings.

SpeedFan is rubbish for temperature monitoring, use RealTemp instead as above.

But yeah, the Core i7s are really, really powerful :)

Not calling you a liar mate im sure theres a mix up but 50c on prime at 4.0ghz in 902 air set up...with the fairly warm weather...i dont think so. No offensive meant on the above

Edit: Lol were like a pack of wolves poor lad

well you see this is what i thought when my q6600 idles at 40 and is at 55 on load.

So what do we rekon the temps are???? I will get a decent temperature monitor.... and report back.

Bugger temperatures. If its quiet enough to be almost inaudiable who cares how hot it's running

Glad he likes the new computer. Just wait until you meet ssds... :)

they are 4 cores? or am i missing something?

4 cores with 8 threads mate, Hyper Threading has made a return in the Core i7 series..

Can't wait til the Westmere based chips arrive next year, those will have 6 cores and 12 threads, and built on a 32nm fab process.

::edit::

Pffft, I am just to slow tonight, thats the 2nd time I have been beaten to it!!

I am guessing he is referring to the HT. With this enabled it shows as 8 cores in the desktop in any cpu monitor or task manager. Its basically 2 threads from each of the 4 cores. :D

I would also like to see some temp pics please. Download OCCT , that usually gives a close estimate.

lmao ! ! You feel slow !!

just got mine to 4.0ghz,but temp are no where near what you state, must be one hell of cooling set up,
and it ain't what you call "silent" either, have turned of turbo going run some more prime and then try enabling turbo on and see where it gets me.

I'm glad I read this thread. I had been using Speed fan and could believe how low the temps were. On idle spped fan showed the cores at 12 deg C on the lowest and 18 deg on the highest of the cores. I'm not sure why such a difference!. After running it showed temps at 38 deg under load. (min 31 max 39 over the cores)

This can't be right i figures as the ambant temp in the room is around 18 deg yet the lowest core was running at 12 deg. LOL

Anyway I installed realtemp as mentioned above and i'm getting idle 30 27 33 26 and under load after 10 mins of prime95 large FFt's of 52 48 54 48. Is it normal to have the cores at such a different spread in temps?

I have only just built the I7 rig so havnt got round to overclocking yet

another quick question what is the "distance to tj max setting? My figures are a lot higher to the picture above, mine show 47 52 46 52 ?

Cheers

I agree, those temperatures do not sound correct at all, I reckon you could indeed add 15c onto those alround.

I'd be genuinely surprised if you noticed any real difference navigating a clean windows install on either system. Assuming all things that can be are equal, an SSD will make more of a difference here than any cpu you could choose from the typical enthusiast line-up. A Q6600 at 3.4Ghz is a fast chip.

It sounds like a monster though, 4Ghz I7, so he's got what, a cpu that's about 15% faster clock for clock than my Phenom II, yet he has it running at 25% faster clock speed than I do, it has hyperthreading and DDR3 memory. It's going to be seriously, seriously fast no doubt, but I don't think Windows would show much difference some how.

Tjmax i believe is set to 100c on the core i7's, so these temperatures are simply 100c minus your current temperatures. So as your temperatures on load are a lot lower atm as your cpu is at stock, the distance to tjmax temperature's will obviously be higher :)

You posted your temps before as
52 48 54 48.
notice it now? (Except the first core but it just changed a degree in temp ;) )
