Texas Chainsaw Massacare fiction or not?

It's based incredibly loosely on a real serial killer called Edward Gein, it would probably be more accurate to say a small bit of inspiration in the creation of the texas chainsaw massacre came from him. He didn't chase anyone around with chainsaws or anything but he did live in a Hick town, murder people and make furniture out of their body parts. He also used to hang his victims up on meat hooks in his basement. Some small inspiration was also drawn from him in the creation of Hannibal Lecter.

I think it's based loosely on a true story. The originial film contained parts of dead bodies at the beginning hence why it was banned in the UK.

really

is that available newhere?

I actually prefer the film from the 70's

what I don't get is film four showed last night this one:

Texas Chainsaw massacre : the beginning

tonight they are showing

texas chainsaw massacre

wtf is the difference?

*hits record button anyway

Turns out Ed Gein wasn't actually a serial killer as his murder count isn't high enough, however wiki says:

his case influenced the creation of several fictional serial killers, including Norman Bates from Psycho, Jame Gumb from The Silence of the Lambs, and Leatherface from The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

So i guess i was half right.

There's a movie based on him, it's terribly low budget and has some terrible acting but still an interesting watch.

Not to sure what the difference is. The orig TCM can be brought on most dvd retailers as the ban, for technical reasons, only applied to VHS not DVD. When dvds first came out I brought Clockwork Orange which had been banned in the UK for 25 years on VHS.

EDIT : I have seen the original and the bit it got banned for at the begginning isn't that bad to be honest. It's much worse in the film later where he hangs that women on a meathook.

See previous posts. It was loosely based upon real events; not "on a true story."

No, it didn't.

No.

It was originally released in the UK under an R rating, and watched by countless numbers of Brits for the next 10 years. In 1984 it was banned during the "video nasty" panic. 15 years later it was available uncut in the UK.

The temporary ban had nothing to do with the alleged depiction of real body parts.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre film from 1974 was "reimagined" in 2003 which is what's on Film4 tonight.

To be fair the 2003 remake is quite good, helps that Jessica Biel is in it.

Aye, i enjoyed the remake, to me the original is a film that was somewhat held back by it's low budget feel and the remake made a good effort at staying true to the source material.

That'd make on hell of screwed up DFS add wouldn't it?

EDIT in fact as long as Linda Barker was one of those on the hooks I think I'd be all for it

Er - I don't think we have R ratings over here? That's the US. Here we call them "X" surely? We certainly did when TCM came out.

I never thought it was that gory a film to begin with, some of the more recent films such as the saw series or hostel are a bit more gruesome.
