Hello guys,

In all honesty, I don't really know what a 64 bit OS does better than a 32 bit OS, but since having my laptop I'm unsure what would be the better option for me.

My current spec is T6400, 3GB DDR3, 9600M GT.

Should I stick with a 32 bit OS on this laptop because I only have 3GB Ram?

I read around but didn't really understand it, it kind of stated that going to a 64 bit OS would improve system performance. Is this true?

Any information would be appreciated.

64-bit Vista increases stability according to Microsoft because you can only install signed drivers into the running kernel.

In certain long integer intensive programs, you'll notice a speed up. Myself, I never noticed much of a difference in day-to-day tasks. The OS seems to use more memory in 64-bit mode as well. I use 64-bit now only because I have 8gb RAM.

What OS are you running on the laptop? If it's 32bit Vista your license is equally valid for the 64bit version version, you just need to get hold of the media. Though you probably wouldn't notice enough of an improvement to justify the hassle.

Wait a couple of months for windows 7 and stick the 64-bit version of that. Or if you can't wait (and are having to buy a copy of vista, which it sounds like you are, make sure to get it from a place that offers free 7 upgrades to people who buy Vista.

Obviously, it depends what hardware you're using, but, if your system supports it, as other have said, 64-bit is the obvious choice.

Having said that, I personally wouldn't bother buying or re-installing an OS in order to upgrade to 64-bit unless you have a specific need.
