The god delusion... Religious debate

How is it common sense?
you are denying the possibility of a deity. Man made religion doesn't really come into your stance.

I'm not denying the possibility of it and never have. However, in doing so, it is only logical that I am not denying the possibility of Thor, Nessie and Santa. Take from that what you will.

That's a bit of an odd retort.

I think he meant we don't know 100% that God (doesn't) exists. Or, technically, 100% of anything. We can't even say with 100% certainty that we will die, as there is a tiny chance I'm immortal. Etc. I imagined it was more of a philosophical statement than a scientific one.

Who created science :p

We created science as a group of things for a group of advances imo, who created medicine? who created rape? who created mugging?

We created it all through evolution which was a slow process and I believe the real advances in human life will come in the neck 50 years.

** + I was only gone from the thread a bit and its huge! Religion provokes such thought :)

Do you eat beef?

If not, then you aren't eating beef because of a religion you don't really believe in/practice (Go Mata etc). That's almost oppression (beef is lovely).
No I don't eat beef. If I were truly pious I wouldn't eat any meat, but I do, hence my point about being as Hindu as a lot of Christians are Christian! :D

A serious question and one that isn't intended to offend... if the only reason you follow a religion is because your parents followed it, then shouldn't you look around and decide for yourself whether it's the right direction?
I come from a mixed background, my dad is Hindu and my mum (was) Christian. So I feel lucky that while they raised me as a Hindu, they allowed me the freedom to choose what I wanted to follow.

You call yourself an atheist and yet say there is a possibility a diety exists.

despite what atheists come up with there's only 3 stances

Atheists - No possibility of a deity
Agnostic - Don't know/don't care
religious - belief in a deity

All the other strong and week stuff is a load of rubbish to bolster numbers.

Sadly you can't just pick and choose which bits of the Bible are 'allegorical'. I always liken it to Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings - in 2,000 years time imagine people worshipping the great creator Lord Potter, don'd with lightening on their foreheads to show their faith. Ridiculous huh?

Difference is that Jesus existed.

Whether he was the son of god or did the things the bible said he did are other questions.

Also Lord of the Rings is a Christian story....

Just to expand, I believe atheism is an ABSOLUTE belief in no deity, and religion the opposite.

Most people, I find, fit into agnosticism.

I don't have to explain. I'm meerly stating my position... in my opinion it is the only logical explanation.
Sorry, I wasn't being cantankerous, I meant what human advances do you see coming in the next 50yrs.

Why on earth not? You can pick and choose whatever the **** you want. It isn't as though God himself bestowed it upon every single one of us, as definitive proof cover to cover is his word.

My stance? I don't know.

Religion seems flawed, and it doesn't hold the answers for me. And Atheism is illogical and arrogant.

So, I shall stay with "I don't know." I am not so arrogant as to think that I know the answers to life and universe, or even to deny the existence of something that I have not yet shown there to be proof of. I will remain open to all the possiblities, my mind is not closed.

Proof please?

I don't deny that a guy called Jesus may have existed and he may have been a carpenter, but there's still no evidence that I know of other than religious text.

Obviously you have not bothered looking into it at all then.

Sorry.

Well my theory is we'll be pretty much where we'll be now, fossil fuels will still be in use but cars are maybe 55% new energy based be that hydrogen or electricity. Science and Technology will be incredibly advanced with diseases such as cancer cured... but given the world of viruses we are now battling a more deadly disease due to the ever "clean" environment we live in.

I would go on.. but yeah :| If I can dig out my shell scenarios on economy future I might post that here.

I'm too lazy to type more :D

That's pretty much where I am on this thing... agnostic.

So what you're saying is that it is a fact that Jesus (in a religious context) existed? I'm sorry but I just don't yet see the proof and I don't think any real proof has yet been offered in over 2000 years. What we have is opinion and belief which is a completely different thing. I'm not saying "he" did or didn't exist. But I haven't seen any firm evidence of this.

Any bets on whether this thread decends into a fight and gets locked before morning? :D

Atheist, and for the following reason.

*The bible babbles on about people living for 800years.
*I wasnt brought up (brainwashed) to believe it so have my own chance to research it.
*There were discovered 12 (i think) other books for the bible that were hidden to make jesus seem holy.
*The Earth is 3billion years old. (thanks to thousands of people being geologist and there combined agreement)
*They have discovered fossils of several different species of human, which i have seen for myself
*Not but 100years ago we discovered the atom which lead to nuclear science, which lead to the discovery of a background radition which can only be explained by an explosion that created the universe.
*religion founds for a worship of the sun, etc etc
*there are many religions and they all follow a similar pattern (as above)
blah blah
blah blah

(there is also a lot more, but i cant be bothered to pack out the evidence)

I could go on for ages doing this. However all this information is useless before the big bang. This is my start, and all i can say is i understand a hell of a lot after it, and i will not assume anything before it. When i die if someone created me, hes clearly should not have assumed i would know, unless he made it fairly obvious, which no ones has.

Ahhhhhh I thought you meant, like growing wings. I was excited.

Personally, I predict a massive war, or pandemic. Maybe I'm a little less optimistic :)

Excellent. So you just pick the bits that aren't ridiculous and ignore the bits that are like they're not even there? Surely that discredits the whole text?

Obviously you have not bothered looking into it at all then.

Great proof, thanks. Now I'm a believer.
