Just wanted to say thanks to all who helped in this thread

After visiting a few shops and feeling up some cameras as a lot of you suggested , (and budgets allowing) it was a choice between the Canon 1000D and 400D.
I really liked the Nikons, but they did not "feel" right when I held them. The canon just fitted. Hope that makes sense.

In the end I went for a 2nd hand 400D with EF-S 18-55 Lens for a little under £300.

Not got it yet, but highly chuffed, so I have a few days to download the manual, and start learning (the sticky documents seem good place to start).

The only other purchase I plan to make for now is a bag, screen protector and UV filter to protect the lens.

I have taken on board things said about the kit lenses, and plan to upgrade later, but I am sure for an absolute beginner it will be fine.

Does anyone recommend any brand of screen protector and UV filter, or and the cheapish ones of the bay ok ?

Thanks again, and hopefully will be able to show off my results when I feel they are good enough for this forum :D

dont get a UV filter. if i can find the images posted by Railiki (probably misspelled the name) I think, hes taken two shots of the same object and there is a significant decrease in quality with the UV filter plus the camera should already have some form of UV coating on the sensor. It generally seems to be wiser to invest in a lens hood rather than uv filter. if its just for lens protection then a circular polariser would do and it would improve some vibrancy in the colours of your image.

Screen protector - get a GGS protector from an auction site, It's just a thin sheet of self adhesive optical glass and it is very tough, have had one on my camera since I got it and there's not a mark on the glass. They make them for a lot of camera models so make sure you get the right one for a 400D.
