I suppose this is absolute best case scenario? http://www.fudzilla.com/content/view/15287/1/

DirectX 11 40nm leap

We've heard that ATI's soon to lunch DirectX 11 performance card, something that we know as RV870 and something that AMD calls Evergreen, should be roughly 1.6 times faster than the RV770 chip.

RV770 is the chip behind ATI's Radeon HD 4870 card and it showed quite good performance, so this 1.6 times performance increase can give you a general idea that the new chip should be quite fast.

Of course 1.6 times is the best case scenario and it should be less than that in some cases, but overall this 40nm chip should be a good step forward for ATI.

The big issue is that by late November Nvidia might launch its Geforce GT300 chip, that might end up even faster, but at the same time Nvidia's DirectX 11, 40nm chip will also be bigger and probably hotter as well.

Was someone hungry?

If this card beats a 295gtx in crysis/stalker etc its gonna be an absolute beast.

The x2 version with the triple display support is what I will want if its faster than the nvidia 300 x2 version.:D

I'm pretty sure ATi will have a few tricks up its sleave (ie 5890 etc) if Nvidia manages to hit back with something other than free goggles or a "Big Bang"

i'm just hoping all these rumors turn out true lol, though dont think i'll be getting one of these cards as they get released, think it might be wise to wait till xmas and treat myself and the wife to a couple each then. gives them time to iron out all the kinks and pricing to settle :)

How is that even possible? the card will be about 20% slower than the GTX 295 if you work it out.. roughly anyway

so only a x2 card will beat a 295 by about 50%

Probably isnt much point in debating that yet. Hell, we have the 4870x2 and GTX 295 now to compare and you will get varying opinions all the way from they match to the 295 kills it.

Does seem to be quite a lot of us looking to jump onto the 5870 crossfire bandwagon :D Dont think I have had a crossfire set up before now that I think of it.

Yeah but in actually game benchies like crysis.

End of the day we will see how it performs. If its close to a 295gtx then that will be pretty sweet.

5870 should be comparable to a 295GTX on balance as its 60-70% faster than a 260GTX overall - and 60-70% is our average gains in SLI for 2 cards.

EDIT: If things carry on shaping up as they have it looks like the 5870X2 will be competitive with the GT300 on both performance and price rather than the 5870.

if that is true i would definately bag a card or 2 or an x2 even.. but there's no way of knowing with no GT300 info

Doubt the prices on them will drop that fast, aside from immediatly after launch... nVidia isn't going to be competitive on price and ATI have already priced them fairly agressively... I'd expect the 5870 to quickly even out around £260-280 and stay there for quite awhile and the 5850 around £150-160. GT300 high end part looks like being closer to £500.

I don't think NV can afford to keep releasing expensive cards, clearly their current strategy is to use their extra featuresets to try and bring the consumer in, but to me it seems to be back firing (i.e. ATi's comeback was way bigger than anyone could have expected, and NV's roadmap was probably to produce expensive GPUs without really caring about yields and what not).

They need to release top end cards for cheaper, look at the X2 pricing of late, and how cheap it is relative to competition to run 4890s in CF.

They should stop concentrating on all these extra features, some of which frankly are pointless, and release fast cards at lower prices. One day developers will turn around and ask why should be go down TWIMTBP route, implement PhysX etc when ATi have a significant market share? Let MS deal with the featuresets in DX11 etc...

I hope for the sake of competition NV release their 300 series with good pricing and with the consumer in mind....I have NV cards in my main PCs but I feel a sort of distaste to going NV again next round TBH with the way they have treated Joe Consumer...
