With zero understanding of the market/technologies/products and 1 mornings web browsing, Ive landed on this model for an all round Living Room device for freeview, pc connection (for films and games), WII at c. 10-15ft viewing distance. (Value for Money important, quality warranty & future proofing more so)

qu1. Any howlingingly obvious reasons why this is a bad choice.
qu2. How do i get the 5 yr warranty panasonic advertise on website
qu3. Any suggestions on where to buy? Ive got a richer sounds in Milton Keynes which seems to offer ok prices.

thanks
Nick

1.) You won't see much, if any benefit with a 1080p screen which is 42" @ 10-15'. You either need a larger screen or you can settle for a 720p model. It all depends on budget. It's a cracking set, but 10' is probably the max distance you want to be from a 42".

2.) You need to visit a participating dealer and have an in-store demonstration and buy the tv once you've had the demonstration.

3.)There is a Panasonic Shop in Milton Keynes, but I don't know thier price. Alternatively see if John Lewis will price match with Richer Sounds and get the 5 year John Lewis warranty, again both in Milton Keynes. There is also a Sevenoaks Sound and Vision in Bedford at are doing a good deal (£799+5yr Warranty, with old tv trade-in/serial numbers) on this set, but you need to collect from store.

I bought one of these a few weeks ago, cracking tv.

At 10-15 foot though I'd be tempted by going larger, we're about 8/9 foot from the tv and it's just about right, wouldn't want it any smaller.

The free 5 year warranty is available if you buy from an approved dealer, however whilst it says you need a demo you don't. I'd called up the 3 local panasonic shops asking for their best prices, then just went into the one that was lowest on a Saturday and said we'll take it.

I'd personally try to get it from a panasonic shop, they'll match most prices on the web.

Got ours for an ok price with delivery and setup.

With the V10 the next size up is a 50inch as they don't do a 46, it's a couple of hundred more though.

They are relasing some even bigger V10s soon though :)

Haven't watched as much stuff on it as I'd like yet, stuck a dvd on last night though and it looked fab upscaled from the player.

Looking forward to watching Iron Man on blu ray soon :)

Bought the TX-P42V10B today realised viewing distance was closer to 6 to 10 ft....had a look in Richer Sounds and Currys (Mostly Samsung and LG), Sony Shop and Pansonic Shop. from about £700 up I couldnt tell the difference in quality on all the brands. Learnt some useful tips for anyone one else looking to purchase.

1. Richer Sounds seem to honour their price match but only once a paid 5 yr warranty is compared like for like (wont consider a price match with a free manufacturers warranty).

2. Currys offer to price match + 10% of the difference..no good if you want a warranty as currys warranty is very expensive...but probably the cheapest way to buy the base unit...Their's sell for c. £1400.so if you find for £1100...they will match + 10% ie additional 10% of £300 ie £1070.

I hope the Panasonic is worth the extra £400 and the ability to play divx over the network works well. Sony W5500 in particular seems as good as screen.

Went for panasonic in end partly because it has a lot of reccomendations and partly because the panansonic shop would supply the TV + BD-60 bluray player + 5 years for £1250 as long as i supply a broken tv in exchange and i pick one of them up from the tip. Could have bought from Richer Sounds with RS 5Yr warranty for £1179 (price matching) or for £1100 from Elden Electricals with Pansonic 5yr warranty. (decided £150 for a bluray player was reasonable + it can support divx playback even if the tv cant provide.)

Not the cheapest TV..hope its worth it.

Looking at one of these myself. Viewing distance about 8-9 feet. One question - what do you feel about the sound from the TV itself ? I'm not a huge fan of a 5.1 surround system, with all the cables etc. Clearly a dedicated home cinema set up is going to be better, but I'm not an audiophile.

Ok, thanks for that. I have one being delivered tomorrow, so I'll know soon enough if the sound is passable !

Like you, I may consider a 2/3.1 setup too - but I'd need a new stand to fit in an amp, sub and left/right speakers ( don't like speakers mounted on tall stands at the side - I like the minimalist look :) ).

I have last years TH-37PX80 TV and cant fault the picture quality. I sit maybe 6-7 feet from the screen and to be honest find it a bit small (I only really watch movies on HD on it tho, not much telly). The internal sound even tho it's only 2.1 is pretty good, but again my hearing isn't great.

Yup, I looked at 37" screens and didn't feel it would be a sufficient step up from my 4 yr old 32" LCD. In fact, the dimensions of my old 32" are only marginally smaller than the new age 37" screens. I think the 42" Panasonic V10 will be just the ideal size for me, in terms of fitting into my living room, and the viewing distance involved. There is no 46" version ( yet ) and the the 50" would definitely be too large for my purposes.

I was more than content with the audio on my old 32" Panny, so I suspect I will likely be satisfied with the sound on the new display ( I hope ! ). I don't really want to have to invest in a soundbar or 2/3.1 setup if I can get away with it - more for keeping the living room un-cluttered than anything else.

The Onkyo HDX 22 thingy is what I'm looking a, sub + amp combined in a small package and the l + r speakers are pretty small.

Ok, thanks for that - I'll have a gander at the Onkyo HDX 22.
Received the TV today, and have set it up. Very happy with it, and to be honest the sound isn't too bad. Compared to older Pannys the bass levels certainly have diminished a bit, but it's adequate. I'll listen carefully over the next couple of weekends then decide on whether a compact audio system, like the one you have highlighted, would be worthwhile.

Yeah it's a shame, my folks bought one about a year and a half ago, forget the model number, but they went for the better specced of the 2 they had a choice from. The reason it was better was mostly due to better sound, seems they don't really do that anymore.

Had a really good play with the sound this evening. It really is ok - two sound modes : music or speech. The latter has more bass emphasis, and the options allow adjustment of bass/treble settings to reasonable degree. Modifying the option "speaker distance from wall" really makes a big difference in bass levels ( for me anyway ).

Really liking the THX mode for viewing blu-rays :) It was stunning.
