hi there

id like to hear anyones experiences with how the 2.7 v6 twin turbo ones drive.

ive got a 4wd quattro boring stereotype in my mind, but id like to hear how they really are.

also, any idea what it drinks like?

no idea to your questions, but i think they're fantastic and they can be had for very little money considering how capable they are..

yes, they're getting long in the tooth, but i don't think that'd be a serious reason not to get one if it's in good condition

From my limited drive, 18 - 24mpg on a run, pulls like a train through the rev range, impresive scope for upgrades.

Numb steering is one of the major downsides.

The first thing I noticed was the massive amount of grip, it goes round corners fast more on the grip front than handling. I never pushed it to the limits but it will no doubt understeer. In the wet traction is superb a FWD/RWD won't see what direction it has went in. Steering it pretty lifeless but then so is most cars with power steering.

If you sit on the motorway you can nudge high 20s even low 30s if stuck on cruise at 70, hard drive low teens.

Easy to get big power figures 500bhp+ is pretty easy if you change the turbos to hybrid ko4s.

Was looking at these myself not long ago, got an insurance quote for a joke and was surprised to get one only only £100 more than the A4. Got a 2.8 A4 in the end, having been put off by the potential for maintenance costs on the turbos especially if it's been mapped. Plus they are well over twice the price of the A4 and, in my book, not twice the car. If the A4 is anything to go by then Firestar is about right - not much feel to the steering or brakes, otherwise a fantastic car for the price.

There's lots of good info over at audi-sport.net, the buyer's guide, if a little old, is a good place to start.

I'm considering one of these for my next car and have been reading about them for the past 3 or 4 months. The only thing that scares me is the cost if the turbo's blow...

There's been a couple pop up in the last month or so which have the turbo's changed and were going for about 6.5k with about 80k miles on a facelifted 2000 plate.

I also wouldn't really consider a prefacelift model as there were quite a few improvements when they facelifted it ie. better interior, larger turbo oil feed pipelines etc. so unless you had seen a prefacelift in stunning condition, i'd stick to the facelifted ones.

Costs aint too bad provided you can spanner yourself, i would only buy one with newish turbos and a full health check by MRC or someone with equally good standing, its the ages of them thats the major offputting factor for me.

terrific. thats pretty much how i imagined it. ive had a fair few a4 diesels in the past... and it was much of the same (grip grip grip, yawn yawn yawn) but with c.300bhp it should give you a few tingles

well see how it goes

I know of one running over 800bhp, was having a nose around it couple of weeks back as it was in MRC Tuning with it's engine out being rebuilt. I saw the car top 200mph at VMax with 600bhp, I suspect 800bhp will be mental...er

im coming to the conclusion that im tired of fiddling about with cars. the golf is so geared to fun that the rest of the time its too compromised. niggly things are going wrong and the amount of fun the car provides doesnt seem to justify the fiddling.

i think i want more effortless thrills. id be lying to myself if i said an S4 wouldnt get tweaked, but i wouldnt be going mad on the car. been there and done that

ive spied one i like.. ill keep you posted

10 year old Audi probably not the most sensible of ideas then?

by fed up with fiddling i mean im not going to modify this car with back breaking suspension and be constantly fiddling/tweaking things to mould it into how i like it.

i might mildly tune the engine, but the rest of it will just be a case of maintaining

what about a subaru? surely these handle pretty well without needing coilovers etc?

also theres a guy with a proper loud old school Audi S2 near where i live sounds good and by the look on wiki has a decent engine too!

Please bear in mind the costs of running one of these.

They share a lot of similarities with the RS4 and therefore cost the same really. i.e. all the sensors are teh same and an EGT is £170 and there are 2 of them and a MAF is £95, o2 sensors are £120, again 2 of them. If you have any upgraded brakes then they're not cheap either.

My mate has an MRC stage 1 runnign about 320bhp and it's nice and quick. On a cruise he'll get 30 ish mpg if you keep the speed down.

However, because of the above I'd look at an RS4 - true more money to buy but they are real cheap these days and won't cost any more to run than an S4 and you have a standard 380bhp with an easy £400 to get to 420bhp.

Anyway join audsrs.com and check the FAQ's and people's experiences etc.

to be fair most modern cars have mafs in excess of £100 especially if they are solenoids and the 02 sensors sound about the same as any other carthose are pretty average costs for an above average car!

thanks mr ibiza. ive had a fair few friends with 20vts and seen how sensors can just "go". ive noticed the s4 has 6 of those pencil coil packs that like to just die from time to time too.

ive been on the audisport site looking for info but that site isnt particuarly techy so ill try that audirs to see what they say... i didnt consider an rs4. lets see what they cost

Yeh seems common with the VAG group. I've not had a coil pack go and neither have my 2 friends with S4's so I don't think they're a worry! Plenty of other bits to go wrong though ;) Remember they're 10ish years old and so bits are on the way out.

If the turbos go you're looking at 20 hours labour plus the turbos and other parts. i.e. EXPENSIVE!

I have an RS4 so ask away.

You can pick an RS4 up for around £12-13k now. And it'll usually have some mods done. Most who own them spend £££ on them too!
