what if germany won WW2

We would be living under a brutally opressive regieme that wouldv'e killed your entire family if someone overheard you saying even the slgihtest thing against the current fuhrer.

Even over 60 years later, or would it have evolved into something less oppressive?

Are you actually implying that something good could have come of one of the most evil and frightening forces the world has ever seen?

I wouldn't go as far to say 'good' but maybe it would've become less evil and brutal over the years, it would obviously depend on many things though.

Once they had conquered all they aspired to conquer and they had the population under control, the leaders would eventually die and maybe a new wave of leaders bringing more modern thinking would have changed things around a little.

I don't know, just random thoughts while waiting for my power cut to end (battery is almost dead ...)

More cultured!?

Yes. German culture was one of the most influential creative forces in Europe for centuries. It extended deeply into Great Britain, the USA, Australia, and even Japan during the Meiji period. From famous poets, musicians, authors, and singers to composers, architects, philosophers, artists, etc, Germany's cultural legacy is simply immense.

She is not called das Land der Dichter und Denker for nothing.

A truly great culture that burns all books that it doesn't like or agree with? Sorry, but I could never agree with that.

We'd have modern infrastructure, a fast, efficient rail system, an autobahn, and excellent cars.

The UK would also be a lot cleaner, and more cultured.

I hate to tell you, but not all German trains are high-speed links; the vast majority of them are old, slow and smell of ****, just like ours. Their trains run on time, same as the Swiss trains do, because they allow an additional 10 minutes for each journey, not because of any fantastic leaps forward in technology or hardwork.

Autobahns are excellent, when they are not being dug up. Honestly, I had to put up with years of roadworks around Stuttgart, and same as the UK they never seemed to be anyone working on them and they never made progress.

As for cleaner, that's not really my impression. People over there still litter and graffiti is rife. I lived there for some time and I still spend a lot of time over there on a regular basis. I loved my time there, but it's not some amazing paragon of what we should all aspire to; it's a modern European country, like France or the UK. It's better in some regards, and worse in others.

what if there had been no WW2, would Germany and the UK still be superpowers?

The UK would probably be a bigger superpower than it is now as the British Empire may have survived.

It's possible that we would have given it up anyway but WW2 crippled this country so much that it gave us no choice.

Anyway I don't think anything good would have come from the Nazis winning, and it's rather sad that so many of you think things would be better considering how many people gave their lives to stop them.

Wow, you just ignored centuries of pre-Nazi cultural history as if it never existed. And then you effectively labelled all German culture as Nazi. Incredible.

Your response assumes that Germany would still be a Nazi state today if she had won the war. I believe that's an unrealistic assumption. Nazism failed to outlive Hitler, because post-war Germany had no ideological commitment to it. Without Hitler, there was no raison d'être.

I doubt Britain's Empire would have survived as the age of Imperialism started to wane after 1918 and Britain was significantly weakened by the war both militarily and finacially and an Empire costs money to run.

I don't think Britain would have still been a superpower though. The natural progression and development of nations like the United States, Russia and China would have eclipsed Britain whether WWII happened or not.

I didn't say Germany was an amazing paragon of what we should all aspire to, and my post was at least partly tongue in cheek.

But I like to think that if the Germans had won the war, they would have done something intelligent with Deswbury. Like wiping it off the map and destroying any trace of human habitation.

:)

Nazism failed to outlive Hitler because they lost the war. Hitler may have been the vocal point for the Nazis, but saying that it would not have continued without Hitler is, to an extent, saying that Al Quieda would not survive without Osama Bin Laden.

Germany was a bitter country full of hate and blame - who knows what would have happened post Hitler. One thing is for sure, it certainly wasn't Hitler that happily executed millions of Jews by himself.

Sorry, everytime this tread comes up a load of folks harp on about how the UK sucks and how Germany is amazing, even though none of them have spent any time there. I wasn't really getting at you.

I'd heartily agree with Dewsbury though; did you pick it because it sounded like Jews-bury?
