audi s4

i dont get why the turbos seem to die too. its just a ko3, they last practically indefinately on 20vt lumps.

as for problems, i do all my spannering myself but i cant see a turbo or clutch change being a 10 minute job on one of these

Well to be fair a lot of people are well north of 100k before they do go...I know of an RS4 running 520ish on it's original turbos at 180k or so!!!

Most upgrade to the KO4 once they go as well.

How much are a set of K04's, i've seen them around £1000 per set from America but not sure on the quality, fitting looks a pain is it an engine out job?

I think Audi KO4's are about £1200 each...

And yes it's front of car off job - not sure if you can do it with the engine in place...probably with ramps.

Oh and the states oens are most likely to be chinese copies...i.e. do not touch!

When you're talking £1200 or so in labour it's not worth risking them blow (and they do) a few thousand miles later!

id guess its down to bad servicing and not caring for the turbos properly that leads to them dying so soon.

ive seen ones with "ko3 hybrids" on, but surely a pair of ko3s would be a simple enough swap if they did die and theyre plentiful.

bar a basic remap etc thats about as far as id go, ill be keeping the spannering to a minimum from now on

Well they came with variable servicing which meant the oil was sometimes i nthe car for up to 18k miles...not good. Most if not all are now on fixed servicing and that helps.

I don't think it's too difficult a job you just need the space, tools and time to do it...

So are we talking about £2.5k to change the turbo's on an S4/RS4? I always thought the K04's were about £1200 if you bought them from Audi, but if you shopped around and got a pair of refurbed ones, i thought you could find them for about £1200 for both.

Well MRC labour is £56 +vat an hour so 20 hours = £1288 with VAT.

Then whatever you can get the turbos for. But the price from audi is about £1k each :( - vagcat states 1050 euros each.

£2.5k is a good budget.

Matt82 - also read up on camshaft wear - that's a potential £2.5k bill.

ko4s... that would be awesome. an s4 estate with ko4s sold recently on ebay for next to nothing and had close to 420bhp. allegedly, with better intercoolers it would have rocketed upwards from there.

i dont want that level just yet, but once you upgrade the blowers, do they keep the same fuelling system?

To do a conversion you need more than jsut the turbos. You need different inlets and a few other bits and bobs and to get the power out you should get an FMIC and gut the precatsa nd fit a decent cat back.

But you're talking serious, serious cash!

Surely if the turbo's went you could source some K03s's cheap enough and they will fit the manifold and downpipe all fine? Then just remap it and you should have a fair bit more power. Not sure on the amount of headroom the fueling has.

oh yeh if you wanted to repair cheap then a set of reconned ko3's and your own labour and it wouldn't be too bad.

Problem is havign the tim, skills, tools and space!

Does it come with the normal K03 as stabdard? Surely you could fit K03s which has the K04's turbine if I remember correctly.

sort of reminds me why ive been so happy with a sheetbox old golf that has gone to 210k miles without ever having had the engine opened up

Yup, it's things like this that are putting me off. Coupled with the fact that a lot of the jobs are engine out ones.

I love everything about the car, except the potential running costs of one :(

I was looking at ones for about 5.5k to leave me with about £2k for worst case scenario's (ie. turbos) or ones for about £7k that have had their turbo's changed. But then if i'm looking at ones for £7k, it's getting into blobeye Impreza STI territory...
