Should I buy a 996?

996 interior is pretty dire. Quite basic, the dash is boring and it's generally not a very nice place to be. In comparison, my boss' 997 Turbo is lovely.

Wouldn't touch a 911 for less than £20k - it will go wrong and it will be expensive. Mine has 48k on the clock and the clutch has just started to slip...annoying.

new clutch = gearbox out!

khushy

PS - 997's are amazing cars - how could they get it so wrong with the 996?

I wouldn't say the 996 has that much wrong with it really, I think it suffers a little bit from the "bandwagon" when it comes to people's views on the car. Even in this thread people are implying it was a poor 911 which simply it wasn't. It was a better car than the 993 that went before if one is objective about it and many people base their view on the car from the fact the lights were not to everyones asthetic tastes, it no longer was air cooled (means nothing other than slightly different sound really) and it's interior was not that special (but it was better than a 993 which feels really ancient!). Sure compared to the 993 is wasn't as raw but compared to the 996 the 997 is a Mercedes.

When the car came out it was still class leading and had a driving position that was easier to live with than previous 911's with less offset pedals for one. The C2, Turbo and GT3 models were epic cars that were top of all the tests back in the day but since the 997 came out and dealt with the interior asthetics (though not all the quality issues) and the front end people have started to be very harsh on the 996. Drive a good 996 and it stands the test of time and then some with breathtaking steering feel and braking feel that still bests most sports cars and get into a GT3 of any flavour and you have one of the greatest (in my book the greatest) sports cars ever built. The Turbo set new standards in speed and ability, which is continued to do until the GT-R arrived, though that won't stand the test of time in my book as though quick I feel it will be epically expensive and simply not as solid.

Dismissing the 996 as "the crap 911" is very very foolish in my book.

Oooooo, new cannon fodder :D. You're gonna be fun aren't ya?

I still say that the 996 hasn't got a poor interior, yes its basic but like I said sports car basic.
What the post should have said is "compared with an Audi RS4 or a BMW M series, the interior is a dissapointment"
The Porsche 911 is one of the best built cars out there.

To the OP, having ran a car that was £50k new when it was cheap - don't. Buying at the bottom end is always fraught with danger. You're much better off with a decent Boxster 3.2S for your money, you'll get newer, better and less mileage. Yes the Boxster gets some stick from the general ignorant turnip on the street, but it's a very good car. Sure, they're expensive to maintain also, but not quite 911 money.

SkodaMart - the 996 interior is functional. Which is great, on a Mondeo. It simply isn't good enough for the price of the car. You'd be ok with it in an MX5, which cost 1/4 of the price, but if you are seriously telling me that the 996 interior is decent for the money, you really do need to check out a few more cars.

I don't care what the inside looks like really, I think a 996 GT3 Mk2 in Speed Yellow is pretty much bang on the money!!

To the OP, forget £15K. Sell something big and spend £45K to get a nice one of these! You'll need legs and arms so maybe a lung or kidney would be a better bet! ;)

A 996 Turbo? I would go for one but insurance would rape me since im 18 :(

Unlike a normal 996...?

At 18, anything will normally violate you for insurance. Because you crash lots when showing off to your mates and the girlies in MaccyD's car park driving a MaxPower special Corsa that has an exhaust that could accommodate a large badger.

I dont feel as though the 996 is having a very fair time here, the interior is adequate for the type of car, its not fantastic but we are talking an interior which would have been designed and thought out in the mid 90's here. Interiors simply were generally not as good back then.

All in all they are fantastic cars which still look great today all in all, to your average joe they look as though they are extremely expensive bits of kit, and to an enthusiastic driver they are still one of the most rewarding day to day cars you can own.

You have to have the kit though: ;) 10 years old, you wouldnt think it.
