Anybody have any experience with these cards? Im considering getting one instead of a 4870 1GB mainly because Im assuming the 260s run a little cooler and quieter than the 4870 stock coolers?

Am I right in assuming this? And the 260 is usually on top when it comes to benchmarks as far as Ive seen. This is also right?
 
I had the original 260 (192) which replaced my 4870 (512mb) which was definitely a step up as soon you take advantage of the 260's large headroom for overclocking.
 
I'd say they're cooler and quieter than the STOCK/REFERENCE 4870 cooler, but you can get some models with greatly improved and subsequently superior cooling performance than the GTX 260. However I'd say they trade blows fairly well in gaming, totally depends on the price your paying IMO.

£114 for the Palit dual fan model with Arkham Asylum which I actually plan on buying. But yeh its either that or the stock 4870. So Im happy if its cooler and quieter than that :D

And I think playing at either 1680x1050 / 1920x1080 this will be keep me quite happy for a while right :)
 
Well I have the Gigabyte GTX 260, and it does me fine at 1920x1200. Certainly a fitting replacement for my 8800GTX :)

I noticed that that model is stock clocked quite a bit higher than some of the other 260 models. How do the regular 260s overclock? Is there a fair bit of headroom?
 
TBH mine hit's a brick wall just above it's OC'd clocks :p I should imagine most cards would get close to mine. I haven't even tested the memory for OCing, since it isn't really beneficial for gaming, and certainly not for folding.

I can fold at 650/1512/2000 (haven't pushed for more), but can only game on 1440 shaders, else it crashes. Must get around to clocking the core at some point :D

Well if I can get it running a bit higher without it getting too loud, I'll be crankin it up :D
 
Most 260 series cards top out around 1500 on the shaders unless you go nuts cooling them... careful clocking with core/shaders unlocked as in some clock combinations you actually end up with slower performance than stock clocks for some reason.
 
Hmm...thats quite wierd indeed. But Im hopin to jus do this with the simple Furmark open plus Rivatuner method...so I should notice it.
 
Ooops forgot to mention thats with my 260GTX SLI and each card runs slightly different default core/shader ratios but I'm clocking them the same on core/shader so it might have something to do with the performance dips on certain combinations.

Do I need DVI-I cable to connect to the PC or is it DVI-D? Anybody know, I havent been able to find out

Edit: Ive managed to find out that DVI D will plug into a DVI-I socket, which is what the GPU seems to have. So buying a DVI-D cable should be alright?

Yep :) Although it looks like a funny socket on the screen, I thought they also had a cross not a line.
 
Which drivers are folks using with the Core 216 superclocked version of GTX260 in XP?

I'm running an old version (182.50) but when I tried to install 190.62 (the latest) or even 185.85 the display froze. Something called PhysX appeared in the Program menu but whatever it is it won't run because NvCPUi.exe (or something like that) cannot be found. I managed to recover the situation by uninstalling everything labelled Nvidia, and then re-installing from the CD supplied with the graphics card.
 
if just below HD res the GTX260 if over I would get the HD4870 1Gb but not much in them at that
