Car salesman slander rant!

I decided to reply to his text with:

"Are you simple? That's slander, you did it from your own phone thus proving how stupid you are as you have provided proof of your slander so expect to hear from my lawyer soon"

Why did you do that? Private correspondance between individuals is not slander. All you've done is make yourself look silly.

Congrats for conforming to the BMW driver stereotype though :(

Now lets just consider things for a moment. Just imagine that this dealer is about to loose his house (much to the displeasure of his lovely wife and 2 children). He is struggling to sell any cars never mind just one. Prices have already been slashed and someone phones him from 200 miles away, doesn't even look at the vehicle and then makes an offer he can't afford to take (we can all work for nothing, even in a recession!)
Just another way of looking at it thats all.

Yeah op probably sounded a bit cheeky, bit of a wideboy to the dealer ears. You can't just do that. It's not negotiating. Lets face it - if you were wondering if he could knock a bit off or a bit more off and that is the difference between buying it and not then you probably couldn't afford it and therefore the whole thing is a pointless waste of time. Maybe the car was absolutly minty and worth the dealer not knocking 'more' off the price. 200 miles isn't exactly that far, either. Sounds like the OP wanted a cheeky punt and the dealer told him where to go.

Now normally I wouldn't really care if someone insulted me or was rude to me as I would just shrug it off, but when it is a professional with whom I'm trying to do business with and they act unprofessionally and insult me it's a different matter.

Simply put, I called a private garage about purchasing a car, but as the garage is approx 200miles away I thought best bet would be to see if they would be willing to negotiate a lower price over the phone so that the car would be within my budget, as if they couldn't/wouldn't lower the price it would be a waste of my time and fuel to go and see it.

Now, speaking to this man over the phone (mobile to mobile) I asked if he was willing, and he decided to rant at me for even suggesting a lower price...

That's when i would have put the phone down and looked elsewhere, not that i would have approached it the way you did.

Chill out, I was angry at being called a w***** for no reason, I had not provoked him in anyway.

I understand, but I was just having a simple conversation making a simple enquiry, there was no need for him to respond in such a distasteful manner.

Probably couldnt afford it? I couldn't afford it, that was the point in me seeing if there was any room for negotiation so that I could afford it, it's not like I asked for a BIG discount, I was seeing if he was willing to sell it for only a margin less than what it was up for. And 200 miles may not be far for you, but a 3 hour journey that could end up being pointless is not just far but a waste of my time and the sellers.

Going by the OP, the guy shouldnt have abused him over the phone.

On the flip side, if the car was out of your budget then mebbe you should have found one within your budget....

"Champagne taste, beer money" is a main prob with things like this....

But how are we to find bargains if we do not ask...

All I'll say i that it would be not be pointless in the least. It would very informatve. Phoning up a car dealer ask flat out asking for a discount is pointless.

Should have just ended the conversation ASAP as soon as he started getting abusive. With an attitude like that it's only his business that will suffer in the long run.

Not really pointless as it saved me almost a grand on my last. And I had enough information about the car from its advertisement, although I definately would see it before purchasing it, but i needed to see if purchasing it was plausable before I made the wasted journey...

Its probable you thought it was a bit of a bargain to begin with as, if it wasn't, you would not have even bothered to contact the dealer.... This person has priced their item according to the value they think it represents and you have slapped him across the face (figuratively) by saying (possibly unintentionally) that its over-priced.

Imagine selling something yourself and having someone want money off it and they dont have the decency or courtesy to even LOOK at what you're selling but want it cheaper anyways ??

You would think they were a cheeky bugger.... No ??

I can see your thinking behind this but honestly the car was hardly up at a baragin price, and even if the seller did think I was insulting him it was no reason for him to act the way he did.

Really? Anytime you buy any high value item surely its always worth asking for a deal. They are going to have some margin on it and better for them to have a small margin than none at all by losing a sale. They can always say no and you can give your money to someone else. I would have thought in times of recession a car salesman would prefer the sale.

Nuvpal - I agreed that he shouldnt have insulted you like that, I just disagree with the asking for discount over the phone...

Altho saying that you dont think it was a bargain, or even close to one, doesnt totally convince me.... If it was way too high a price then you wouldnt have entertained it in the first place...

Never said you shouldn't ask for a deal but there is a time and place for it and, in the vast majority of car sales, asking for a deal over the phone is pretty crappy if you have not been to see the vehicle in question.

Its just the way things are I guess... People are so used to clicking on a button and buying everything online that they think it should be the same for everything...

Remember, a salesperson's job is to get you into the showroom and speak to you face to face... Love or hate it, thats their job and that, on the whole is how cars are sold.

I am sure if anyone asked someone in here to do their job but to do it THEIR way and not the way you want or normally do it (usually cause its the most efficient, easiest and best way for the customer) then you would take the hump slightly...

He didn't do a very good job then :p

It shouldn't really be an issue for any sort of professional though being asked for a discount over the phone. It's his sale and his commission at stake so he should be persuading the OP to come not resorting to personal slants and racial slurs.
