Yep, that's me screwed for the next year then :D

Something I have always wanted to achieve for some reason. I've never done a marathon or a triathlon or swimming event for that matter - but figured I could throw myself in at the deepest end possible and see what happens

The event is right here on my door step (Louisville) next August, so I figured no excuses (besides the outrageous entry fee!).

2.4 Mile swim - 112 Mile bike - 26.2 Mile run  :(

I'm already really nervous about it!

Anyways - just thought I'd share my stupid commitment, anyone on here completed one?

Well, good luck.

I'v always wanted to try a triathlon (not an ironman tho :D ) problem is i cant really run...or swim very well :(

Whats your training plans?

Hells bells! Be great if you can give us an idea of current fitness and what your training plans are. Keep us informed!

Cheers guys.
Just at the moment I am trying to get my head around my next year or so of training :(
As of today - my fitness is probably average. I am a sporty person but my focus is towards the weight room. I mean right now I could go out and run for a few miles no sweat or do a 15mile bike ride with ease - however what I signed up for is something I can't quiet comprehend how hard it will be :D

Once I get my training program sorted for the up coming Autumn and Winter months I'll keep this thread updated and let you know how it all goes. Got to find a gym with a pool and relocate to that one for now.

I'd rather do a brevet (200mile bike) in the middle of winter. Far too much running and swimming for my liking. 100miles on the road doesn't even register any more :D

 Dont these things take many years of training (doesn't a marathon alone take a good year to 2 years).

Hopefully not ;) I probably sold myself a little short on the fitness levels above to be honest.
A good solid year of training (mostly twice a day) should do it!

Yeah, if your starting from a good level of fitness then a year should be enough time to properly train for it.

Would be good if you keep this thread updated letting us know how your training is going.

This is what I am hoping to do - I'll try and keep this thread updated as much as possible with boring workout posts and the like:
This morning - Spinning for an hour then 2mile run.

I think the running is the killer part. Is the swim in the sea?

It's in the Ohio river - kind of gross but whatever :)

It DOES take many years training to be competitive. A lot of pros are in their late thirties. But from a reasonable athletic base 8 months of 15 hrs a week should get you round in 12hrs.

If you've never done any proper swimming I'd strongly recommend you get a few one-on-one swimming lessons. Made a huge difference to me this year, got a bit faster but the main benefit was dramatic increase in efficiency. Efficiency is what's important for triathlon swimming.

I'm also stepping up to Ironman distance next year (Aug) after sprints and a half-iron this year. Already booked my next half-iron for May 2010.

Bristol half marathon tomorrow morning... I'm off to bed!

Edit: Do you have any mates who do the Ironman distance? They are all nutters if you ask me - the nutrition alone is crazy. Don't underestimate how tough the last 15 miles of the run will be after you've been on the go for 10hrs already and are thousands of calories down.

I have a friend who completed the same one a few years back - she has also signed up for the 2010 Ironman. She is gonna go through everything with me which will be a huge help!!
Good advice on the swimming coach ;-)

How did the half go?
