im almost ready to buy one, but as i have a d40 i would want the version with the built in motor, but having read on here and TP when doing macro work you mainly use manual focus.

so would i get any benefit out of buy the afs version over the normal one ?

looking on the bay it seems none will auto focus on my body anyway.

What other choice in lense is there for he same money ?

Dave.

Tamron is the best choice really.

Will you likely do portraits, or something with the 90mm lens? If not, MF would be fine, as it'll be fine should you upgrade your body.

i probably wont do any portrait work, so manual is probably fine then, as for the 70mm i think id prefer to have the bit extra reach on the lense.

You'll find you use it for a lot more than macro work, so you'll probably use AF quite a bit. I tend to use my Sigma 150mm for all manner of things, motorsport events particularly, whenever possible. It's just a switch between manual and AF.

Given the choice between one with a focus motor or one without, get the one with unless there is a significant price difference.

for motorsport il probably use my 70-300mm il keep looking for one with the motor just incase tho, mainly as its a faster lense, hopefully il be buying by the end of the month.
