Hey guys,

I want to go to Egypt for about a week tops near the end of December, myself and another person. Any ideas on places to visit or areas of interest or pricing, you know the usual?

Looking to spend about £1400 max for both flying and accomodation but less it always better. I've seen ads for the Luxor area anyone been there?

Thanks in advanced.

Went to Luxor about 6 years ago, loved the place.

Couple of points:

It's a Muslim country so do remember to abide by their rules, they are an incredibly friendly bunch of people, but just remember a few simple rules and you'll be fine.

Don't be put off with haggling over prices; it's part of the norm over there when buying merchandise off the street (but don't go into a Cafe and haggle over a coffee, that's fixed!! :D)

Luxor itself has a handful of historic things around it, a good trip is into the Valley of the Kings itself which is a short journey by bus.

There's options such as camel riding (and racing if you get a good guide, camel racing is a brilliant experience) as well as 4x4's and surfing in the sand dunes.

I found the place to be quite cheap, but do also remember that the locals will offer to help out on almost anything and then say "Baksheash" (sic) which is tip, if I remember rightly Islam is quite charity based and so a 'tip' is often the norm for even a smile or a point in the right direction.

Can't really think of any faults in the place. I certainly wouldn't stop there much longer than 3 or 4 days, maybe 2-3 days to see historical sites and a day on the dunes, but it's certainly a nice break.

Few things I'll never forget is just walking down the back streets of Luxor and talking with my partner and a few locals shouting "Emmerdale Farm, eeee by eck" as they pick up any accent you have within an instant. Also remember going doing a back street and seeing a bloke with nothing below the waste (sorry just read this back, I actually mean had no legs and was using his hands to walk - my bad) just walking down the street while snake charmers amused themselves and the locals played games in the street with 'markers' made from dried camel dung. Definately a few magical moments.

Luxor is awesome in december, as is the red sea if you want a beach type holiday. Personally for me Luxor is the place to go.

I heard they've got these large triangular things. Supposed to be quite impressive.

Actually, I have seen them, and they're more than "impressive". Go see them. And go "WOW".

Thanks loads everyone, is 7 days too long then? Also what's shopping like over there?

Lastly any suggestions on hotels? Pricing? Flights?

I prefer the sinai, its more geared up for tourists (they make it look nice) and there is plenty to do. To be honest I didnt like how 'real' mainland Egypt was. But it was worth the trip if just to see the pyramids.

Went to the Sinai Radisson, absolutly brilliant. Got scuba access and you can even snorkel off the private pier, went out on a boat which was fun, the driver thought he was a drugs smuggler and was throwing his boat all over the shop to everyones amusement. Went quad biking and a woman broke her neck, but I really enjoyed the ride, look after yourself and it is great. A real eye opener if you have not seen this kind of thing.

Egypt is awesome. You will love it. Lot of history there obviously and the amazing ancient architecture etc.

If you want to do luxor and the ruins (as opposed to a couple of days there or in Cairo and then onto the red sea) then perhaps a cruise may be the better bet? There are loads to choose from and they can start ether in Cairo or Luxor and travel along the river to see all the main sites. One I looked at a couple of weeks ago went from luxor (stayed there a couple of days so you could see luxor/karnak temples, as well as the other big one, and the valley of the Kings etc) then travel all the way down to Aswan (stopping at the major ruins on the way) before heading back. All that in a week on either a 4 or 5 star boat for around £600-700 (with trips to the sights included), or even cheaper if you went next week (around £450). :p

Having been there before (3 days in Cairo then a week in Hurghada with a day trip to Luxor (not a cruise)) I would suggest you could do Luxor in a couple of days, which means the rest of the week (if you stayed there) could be a bit boring as it's miles from anywhere else. :)

My advice is don't bother. I had a fascination with Egypt from an early age and couldn't wait to see the pyramids myself. When me and my girlfriend finally got to go she was so disappointed she cried. They are in a massive state of disrepair with no visible signs to preserve them , there is graffiti scrawled all over them , litter all over the place and people pulling lumps off them at any opportunity. Not to mention dirty little street urchins all over the place either begging or trying to pickpocket you. That combined with sweltering heat and youll wish you went to Great Yarmouth for a week instead. Just my opinion.

Eh!:p

When I went it was nothing like that (sort of). There was a little grafitti on the bottom stones, but no rubbish I could see. However the fact the city was parctically surrounding them was a it diappointing, as well as the number of tourists and beggers/"bumsters". Did you go inside? That was an interesting experience. The city itself is a dump however, but then that is to be expected.

Nah I didn't realise you could go inside , I bet it smelt of urine though...

Thank's very helpful! Any suggestions on companies? Lastminute, flightcentre anything to look out for.

Be careful of the heat.
I drink very little - in fact I used to do half marathons with no water however on the day I visited Karnak Temple I got through 14 bottles of water and needed more.
My wife & youngest daughter took one step off the coach and got back straight on it while me & the eldest just about made the 100 yard walk to the main Temple and into the shade.

Yeah, they open only one each day and there are limited tickets (our guide got them for us). We were lucky enough to get inside the Great Pyramid and it was very impressive, the grand chamber and the corridor leading up to it were huge! No photos unfortunately as you're not allowed (and I didn't want to argue with the men with guns...) And no it didn't:p

I found one on Travel zoo when looking for cheap deals a couple of weeks ago for £430 (leaving last week), however the other prices seemed quite cheap too. Maybe look at Kuoni which I think is the company we went with (smallish company, and we ended up with a guide and driver for just our family on most of the trips we went on), however they are a little more expensive than most companies (but worth it IMO).:)

Just found the website again (had it saved), which was linked from Travelzoo: http://www.africansafariclub.com/tz68/

However I don't know how good they are and haven't used them.:)

As for the heat, in December it will be fine. We went in April and it was quite hot, especially in the Valley of the Knigs which is a natural heat amplifier but it was bearable. However if you ever think of August I would think again, especially in the interior (eg Luxor not Sharm etc) it will be HOT, and having been in the sahara for a month or two last August (where daily temps could easily reach 47 C) I wouldn't recommend it for a holiday as you don't want to be out too long (and I like heat normally).:p

Last year on May 29th I was in both of them.
It cost £2.50 to go into the smaller one but the big one cost me a bribe of £25 :)
It is usually £10 if you can get a ticket.

You can also take your cameras inside but again there are bribes to be paid otherwise they will take your camera.

Sharm El Sheikh looks amazing and the prices for the Savoy there are really really good, well within your budget
