would the image look sharper than gaming on 1080p 24" ignoring monitor make specs. does the smaller size make the image any better due to smaller area to fit pixels in?

not bothered about size as i can always hook up the 42" panny

Your first post is correct.

The smaller screen should in effect make the image look sharper than the 24" at the same res due to pixel density :)

The dell and the samsung on offering at the moment are both meant to be very nice.
The Dell having a better panel in it AFAIK, The dell is about 200 the samsung about 140 so depends on your budget really.

I have the 222h, pretty similar but I think they 226h has a faster response time , 222h is 5ms v's the 226h having 2ms.
I got mine on the MM for 90 quid & it was only 3 weeks old, well worth it. I would pay the 140-150 new price knowing how nice it is.
It is a TN panel, meaning the viewing angles aren't that great (seem ok side to side but up & down are a bit crap) but if you just game on it or watch films head on then its perfectly fine.
