***The Official Nokia N97 Thread (Keep all N97 stuff in here)***

Just a heads up, word from Nokia World in Stuttgart is that the 'major' firmware update (the one where it has been suggested that Skype would be included), is due in October (v20). The kintetic scrolling in all menus, available on the N97 mini and one of the Xpressmusic handsets, will be coming to the N97. Whether this is in the major update or inbetween, I don't know.

There is a new Ovi Maps beta (v3.3 IIRC, the haptic feedback doesnt work for me in this version on the most part) and an update to the Nokia Messaging app (requires v12 firmware according to requirements), which incorporates Facebook, also the Lifecasting app is available to the N97, all available at Nokia Beta Labs.

Oh yes, almost forgot the N900 is available for preorder at the Nokia store for £499 and there's more info on the N97 mini which we have all known about :)

when i got my N97 4 weeks ago i inserted my tmobile sim into the phone. i was waiting for the PAC to transfer. i noticed the accuweather worked straight away.

when i placed the vodafone sim, which is the contract i have. the accuweather failed to display any information. still to date, i cant get the weather software to work.

there aint a lot of games out for the N97 like the iphone.

i found the fm transmitter useful and the 32 gig storage is amazing.

i have loaded the fone with dexter and the inbetweeners. i get to watch them on the train on my way to work.

I think we should have a refresher on what app's people are currently using? :)

I'll kick my list off tommorow, but i'm pretty sparse at the moment.

One thing annoying me is the length of time it takes for Nokia Inbuilt email app to connect, any good ones people would reccomend?

And thanks to the post above regarding information on possible firmware updates, positive news at least :)

Oh and Fox, - what screen protector did you go for, and is it any good?

Nokia Messaging

A big step-up from the built-in client - I have no idea why they don't offer it as standard. Free and gives you push email.

I tried that today, seems like Nokia have basically copied BIS from Blackberry, which isn't a bad thing.

However I then got a message claiming to be from Nokia, but containing links to Orange's website saying that after 30 days they'd be charging me a fiver a month for this unless my plan includes unlimited email.

The only plan Orange offer with unlimited email is the "Panther" plan, which also states that said plan is only available on Blackberries.

Of course, half the Orange site is down for maintenance (again) when I go to have a look and when I ring them, they can't tell me anything useful because it's down for their staff too.

Oh that's seriously weak. It appears that Orange have licenced Nokia Messaging for thie own email service, so when you use Nokia Messaging, Orange think you're using their email system without paying.

Sorry dude

Posted at AAS regarding v2 firmware:

skype is there too, according to unwiredview.com

"SIP framework fully integrated with address book. Skype will be distributed as separate app since October. Only N97 N97/mini for now. Fully integrated with phone logs, call logs, address book."

(couldn't find the original post)

EDIT: Found it

I was hoping for some springy feedback when scrolling to the end of the page, like on the iPhone and in the mavity app. I've lost count of the number of times I have scrolled to the bottom of a website and wondered if the phone had frozen to load something or if I'd actually got to the bottom.

Whats the betting the Skype integration gets ruined by the network providers firmware?

Makes a good case for debranding, I'm pretty chuffed I have an unbranded phone as that saves some faf.

I'm sure there is a thread on the Vodafone forum stating that debranding won't invalidate your warranty with them. Not sure if Nokia service centers are bothered if you try to get them to repair an debranded phone.

Just spoke to Orange about this. While what you said is true, the launch of said service has been postponed "for the forseeable future" and I can continue to use the trial free of charge, with the app being supported by Nokia, not by Orange.

I had the guy confirm that I definitely wouldn't be charged without prior warning and note that he had advised me of this on my account file in case of future billing cockups.

Apparently they will be launching a new plan that's basically the same as the Panther plan (Blackberry plan) in that I'll lose my unlimited text messages and gain unlimited email. I am fine with this as I am not a teenager.

For those of you who think this still sucks because Orange users are going to get charged eventually. If you read the Nokia Messaging site, it says they expect all carriers to offer the service "for a low price" so the rest of you are going to get charged, it's going to be just like Blackberry BIS.

Also, happened to visit an old friend of mine, turns out he bought the phone on it's launch day and thus knows a bit more about it than me, and he gave me one top tip which I've just tried and can confirm to be true.

Get rid of the Ovi suite, it's cack, really slow to do anything, instead install the latest version of PC Suite which works wonderfully, the app loader doesn't hang for several minutes every time it wants to update the app list and everything is super fast. Much much better.

Now we just wait for the V20 firmware, I guess.

This is true, for those wondering about this, Nokia Email/Messaging has always been provided as a trial and will most likely go to a pay service, unless they do an 'Ovi Files' turnaround. You can confirm this if you go sign in to the Nokia Email site. :)

Are you for real?

Uhh what? If you lose the unlimited text messages on Orange, it drops to "only" 500 text messages a month, I'll never send that many in a month.

and sending more than 500 makes someone a teenager?

Good stereotyping.

Because you send less than 500 does that mean I can say you have no mates?

Because you made this post does that mean I can say you have no sense of humour. :p
