Lights off at petrol stations?

funny this thread gone opposite way of my 'lid off to fuel up thread' ....takes like 1 second to turn off lights, surely not hard to do ;) ;)

I can think of 2 possibility's why they would tell someone to turn them off.

1. The glow of the lamp filament could possibly ignite the fuel vapours. Unlikely because a bulb is sealed.
2. The glare off the headlights could hide the front numberplate from the camera?

Still it does seem a little OTT. I've left the engine running numerous times with headlights on and never had any hassle.

1. - No it couldn't, unless you have open bulbs with the filament in the air (which then wouldn't work in any case). That's like saying 'you can't start your car on the forecourt because the ignition spark may set fuel on the floor alight. Fuel vapour in the minimal amounts you get at petrol stations will not ignite from such things, only direct/naked flames right at the fuel.

2. - Irrelevant. Fox only had his side lights on, which on his BMW are angel eyes which will not give out enough light to obscure a numberplate. Especially at 5.30pm.

Which serves no purpose. Whilst I applaud the stiff upper lip and acceptance of the British, it's something I also find irritating :o
 
The thing is she insisted this was 'policy' and had been for years.

Given that I normally use that filling station at night I've always got my sidelights on. Never been an issue before.
 
Maybe the light being on makes it hard to read the numberplate.

I don't really see the issue to be honest, she was following what she was told. Not everyone in life can assess situations, instead they prefer to follow the rules to avoid risk of being blamed.

What if you did drive off and on the camera they noticed you did have lights on? she would have lost her job I expect.

Oh well I guess ranting at a real world petrol attendant is a move up from internet people :D

I got told to turn my lights off by a TRuck Driver Delivering Fuel once :confused:

Since then i had always thought they might be scared of the slight risk of making the place go bang :p

Never realy did work out why he had a problem with it though

The issue was that I stood in the cold at the petrol station like a numpty for several minutes wondering if the pump I was using was defective. I beleive I made this clear in the OP, perhaps you missed it.

I think you are the most predictable person on this forum.

I think the real reason was she fancied you and wanted to spend as much time as possible checking you out.

I can't see how they can either, but it's a possibility.

I have things like this happen everyday in life, I don't run to the internet about it though - something Fox seems to accuse other people of quite often.

The world hasn't imploded as a result of this thread.
 
I was just saying that my first though when reading your post was that maybe the lights obscured the camera! I didn't fancy reading 5 pages about it.

Sorry if you feel the need to pick my reply out above everyone elses.

That's almost as Darwin as the woman who lit a lighter to check the level of petrol in her cannister in the car and received 2nd degree burns!

FWIW on topic, never had a problem with lights on, although I don't have angel eyes, only bi-Xenons :(
 
I always assumed that if you left your lights on you'd blind the cameras and that that was the reason for having to turn them off but someone working at a petrol station told me it was to stop drive off's because if they don't do everything they can to stop it happening the cost of the fuel comes out of their wages.
