Hi all,

Was wondering what you all think of Owen being the prestigious number 7 at Manchester United?

I think he has got big boots to fill considering all the great players that came before him.

Oh and the question is who was number 7 before Cantona? Was that Bryan Robson? And before him who was number 7?

If Fergie doesn't give him games, he'll never gel with the squad, more than capable player. Utd look desparately short in creativity so far this season. Rooney back to the left wing where he was consistantly excellent end of last year as Utd's form picked up, Owen infront of Berbatov, 3-4 games, they'll be very very potent.

If Utd keep playing very different football without an established pair in central midfield with the team changing by the game and then giving Owen 20 mins at the end in a game where the team hasn't been playing in a style that would suit Owen, I have no idea if he'll ever play consistantly well for them.

What is it with all the Utd threads today? :D

I think shirt numbers can bring the best out in players, but it depends on the individual and how they are given the shirt. Ronaldo is the perfect example of a player given a shirt number with history by someone who believes in him (Ferguson) and wants him to make his own mark. And nobody can deny that he didn't fulfill the expectation on him. Owen on the other hand wasn't given it in the same context. In ways it's good that it's been given to someone else so quickly after Ronaldo's departure, otherwise it would be gradually built up and up as to who would be good enough to wear the shirt and whether they measure up to the previous player.

Nahhhh Ronaldo was only an average player - well below expectation :D

+1 about glad that shirt number has been given so quickly after his departure

(edit - in ref to other comments)

I dont think any Utd fan wants to see Rooney on the wing unless desperation due to injury strikes - he is far more lethal through the centre than Berba + Owen would be

The only proviso I put on that is IF Rooney was played in attacking mid position with both those two ahead - although Im not entirely convinced we would get the most out of him, it might be good to see in an FA Cup game or some EPL game after its won this season, I cant see it happening permanently this season though

I reckon it will happen at some stage, he'll be made an attacking central midfielder with two forwards playing ahead of him. That would be quite awesome. We would need a hell of a midfielder alongside him though, Essien perhaps. :D

If he gets fully fit.....Hargreaves is just that type of player (no disrespect implied but Essien is undoubtedly better, but think OH is pretty darn good too)

He is and as much as I hate saying it or thinking it, his knees are banjaxed and will never be fully ok. :( I also think of Rooney as possibly the next Scholes as he started up front and was moved into midfield where he blossomed with Cantona in front of him. I think the biggest aspect of Rooney possibly doing well in central midfield is that he always wants to be where the action is, he gets bored standing further up the pitch and would rather run back and get involved. His passing and vision is up there with Scholes in his best years. He would be a pretty explosive midfielder, but then again he has always played up front, it's his role, he knows it best. I'd love to see him there for a few games though with Owen and Berbatov ahead of him, Fletcher behind him.

You don't suppose Ronaldo's fulfilment of his potential has anything to do with his growth, training, coaching, instructions from the manager, position within on-field formations or interactions with other players on the pitch, do you?

Nah, it was clearly the single digit on back what did it.
