Hello, i recently got the crosshair III motherboard which came with a very smart looking sound card. i didnt use the sound card at first as i used a usb headset.

I just purchased a better headset with analogue so i could once again use a sound card.

Anyways, when the card is plugged in, it lights up so the motherboard is supplying the power to it but my system wont recognize that it is plugged in. Its not listed in device manager and when i try to install the drivers it says i dont have the hardware.

(it's in the right slot as per the motherboards instructions, i have no other sound drivers installed now, nothing disabled in bios)

At first i thought it likely to be a defected card, but i have read a couple of other instaces of peolpe in the same situation with the same messege when trying to install the drivers. Unfortunately i havent seen a clear solution to the issue so i thought id see what you guys thought.

Thanks

Hi, the soundcard you got with the crosshair mobo is the same troublesome card which came with the asus rampage 2 extreme(had quite abit of trouble getting mine to work). its a pain in the arse to get going. Make sure its in the right mobo slot. if you have any wires going into the card(HD Audio or AC97) then you must select this in the bios or it wont work. you then need to install drivers to get it working. you also need to use the up to date ones off the asus website (you cannot get the drivers from creative).

once you have the right drivers and the card is set up properly + bios changes then vista should reconise it. once it does install the soundMax driver and it should work fine. did for me :)

p.s. i havent got indepth knowledge about soundcards but i know this card isnt as amazing as it first seams, it doesnt have the new chip or something which makes crystal clear sound but its done software side. its a good card (im more than happy with it once i got it working) but its not as good as the higher end cards you can get.

EDIT: A link to the drivers page for you :) its set for 32 bit vista but if you have another OS can just change it at the top, you need the driver in the Audio section.

thanks for the reply mb.

I currently dont have the HD audio cable connected to it, and as such its turned off in bios. I was actually thinking about trying to connect it and set it to HD in bios but didnt think it'd accomplish anything.

I havent gotten the drivers from the ASUS website,i have been trying to install the ones from my motherboards CD and i downloaded the same ones off a different website. Both these drivers wouldnt let me install them because it said i didnt have the hardware connected.

Did you install the drivers before Vista recognized the card being in?

just out of curiosity it's supposed to go in the top pci-e slot. you tried in in any of the others?

It could be the slot itself

Yer i slipped it into the other pci slots just to check, no joy.

I dont think its the slot because of the other people who have the same problem.

Thats the first mistake you made, NEVER use the supplied Asus CD. used it a year ago completely messed my installation up and had to reinstall OS again. thought Asus would have got this problem sorted by now and tried it with my R2E and nope it did exactly the same thing again(was hungover and installing vista 3 times in 1 day was a pain in the ******* arse!).

Its far easier and better if you download all the drivers from the website as they're up to date and pretty much gurranteed to work. on the driver CD theres a notepad file which tells you the order of which the driver cd would install the drivers, download the up to date drivers and install in the same order :)

As for the card, you need to put the audio wires from the front panel into the card, which setting you used (AC97 or HD Audio) you must apply in the bios. then vista should recognise the card :)

if your pc is working fine other than the soundcard uninstall ALL sound based drivers (anything what says soundMax or creative) and make sure it doesnt come up in device manager. then turn off your machine, make the alterations you'll need to make(putting the wires into the soundcard and enabling it in the bios). start up your machine and install the new SoundMax driver from the link i posted above. it should work. if your happy with it then good, if you would like to install the creative software aswell then download the up to date version from the link i posted above and should be fine and dandy.

p.s. as for the question "does it matter what slot i use" it shouldnt matter but i advise you to place it in the designated slot.

My asus disc didn't work with window 7 so I never installed anything.

Worked fine for me. Also downloaded the exe's of the motherboards pages and used what I wanted.

The disc is useless

Thanks a lot for the help, i will try it as soon as i get home from work.

*Looks at the clock longingly*

Your first post has made me want to get a high end asus sound card instead now :p

i know asus dont have any supported drivers yet so abit intrigued if everything works fine? wouldnt mind going bk to 7 as i find vista annoys me :(

np and i find this card better than average mobo audio which i use but if you want a high performing sound card then youll have to fork out ££££ for a decent creative :P

no problems at all.

I think they all worked as stardard, only one of the exe's I had to change to vista for it to install

I have had no joy with trying those things, and the option to select HD or AC7 has disapeared from my bios settings.

Im very confused by this.

Im considering just buying a different card.

I have exactly the same issue with an old x38 maximus formula I'm messing about with at the moment.

Sound card in, lights up, nothing in device manager.
I tried an old MSI/Creative PCIex1 soundcard and that does the same, although that works if you place it in the second x16 slot.
I also tried an abit PCIex1 wifi card and that doesn't work either. It lights up but I get nothing in device manager.

This board has 3 PCIex1 slots which all give power to the various cards, but nothing shows up in device manager.

If anyone can shed more light on this I'd be really happy to hear it.

Hi,

Was trying to get the audio over HDMI working on my gfx card and disabled HD audio in the BIOS. Now it has disappeared and I can't use the little soundcard anymore. :(
