So... I'm looking for classical music, but, am so very lost...;)

I know of composers such as Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Vivaldi, but don't know the best "works" to look for.

over to you ;)

Listen to Vivaldi's Four Seasons for a start.

You could also have a listen though this.

Very interested in this thread. So much classical music it's hard to know where to start.

Something I have been listening a lot too recently though...

New Zealand Symphony Orchestra – Britten: Sinfonia Da Requiem, Op. 20 / 4 Sea Interludes - Spotify Link

spotify links, what's this ? EDIT: not available in your country - I'm in Brazil - so no spotify for me it seems....

Thats the same problem I have, hundreds of pieces but I never know the names or am just overwhelmed.

Baby on the way so looking for calming/relaxing pieces...

Ahh boo. Don't know of an alternative version for Brazil. They're suppose to be opening it up to America soon though, so maybe that roll out will include Brazil.

For a start.....

Concerto for Flute, Harp, and Orchestra, K. 299 - Mozart
Carnival Of The Animals: Aquarium - Saint-Saëns
The Planets: Venus, the bringer of peace - Holst
Suites for Cello, Suite No.1 in G Major BWV 1007: Prelude - Bach
Lakmé: Flower Duet - Delibes
Canon in D major - Pachelbel
Peer Gynt: (Prelude) Morning - Greig
Clarinet concerto in A major K. 622 - Mozart

Some of my all time fav classical pieces :D All absolutely stunning pieces in their own rights.

Classical Guitar

Oh god...where do we start !! There is just so much brilliant classical music around. Someone mentioned the four seasons, thats a great recommendation, brilliant music to drive in the countryside to. As mentioned above Classic FM is a great station and a good one to listen to for picking up some recommended composers.

Great music all in all. I wonder how many of the "great" bands we listen to today will still be listening material in 300 or 400 years time.

You've had some good suggestions so far. I played the violin for years, so the things that come to mind first are violin pieces.

Mendelssohn Octet

Massenent - Meditation from Thais

Vaughn Williams - The Lark Ascending

Vivaldi - Four Seasons, Winter II

Slightly less calm, but it's a wonderful symphony (listen to all 4 movements!)
Beethoven Symphony no 5

Lots of good stuff mentioned. A few I would add

Elgar Enigma Variations
Dvorak 9th Symphony

Beethoven's 6th
Sibelius Finlandia

You might be surprised how much you recognise, especially stuff like

Saint Saens Danse Macabre
Britten's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra
Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance
Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf

And http://www.classicfm.co.uk/on-air/hall-fame/ is a good place see what is most popular.

There's lots of good newer pieces, mostly from films I find, favourites including Lord of the Rings and Requiem for a Dream. Latter is a very haunting piece
