• Competitor rules

Please remember that any mention of competitors, hinting at competitors or offering to provide details of competitors will result in an account suspension. The full rules can be found under the 'Terms and Rules' link in the bottom right corner of your screen. Just don't mention competitors in any way, shape or form and you'll be OK.

And the Cypress shader count is...

It was an uncalled for observation hence amounts to a personal attack.

So calling you a hack is a terrible thing? Why's that? Are you sensitive to being called a hack?

I'm doing so because of the crazy claims you make that lack substance.

That's why you were calling Charlie a hack I expect, so surely it also applies to yourself.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion you have to remember that - if they are wrong show they are wrong - if my posts are such crazy claims that lack substance they won't stand upto scrutiny on their own merits - theres no need to address my character.

EDIT: As for calling charlie a hack... he has access to sources and information that should serve him better but he twists it all to his own agenda making a complete mess of what could be much more objective journalism.

So by that logic, why are you complaining about Charlie? There's no need to address his claims now is there? Everyone is entitled to their own opinion after all.

Because the topic of debate was charlie's character - I might not have thought it through too well before posting true.

$300 = around £300 in the UK doesnt it. so £300 for 5870...

No it doesn't, Where did you get that from?

$300 = £182

£300 = $491

Did you fail maths at school by any chance?

Even when you add VAT you still don't come close to £300...

£182 + VAT = £210

yes we all know that officially due to the current exchange rate your right with your figures ......but you seem to forget the normal hey over here we will ignore the exchange rate and just do a straight doller for pound sign swap.

anyway wasnt the last rumour the $299, $399 and $599 price points, if so i reckon we will be lucky to see £250, £350 and £550 at launch...obviously they will drop soon after.

My god, this has not been the case for so long with ATi cards. The 4850 and 4870 cards at launch were more or less exactly the converted dollar value + VAT. The same applied for the 3800 series, too. I don't see what is so hard to grasp about this.

If something cost $300 in the US and $500 in the UK everyone would just buy from the US.

Have you tried buying something from the US? not to mention you usually lose any warranty on it, you generally get slapped with VAT, import duty and handling fees and often it works out more expensive in the end than cheaper.

Who does that?

I've not seen any examples that you're talking of...

Thank you, I don't understand how so many people find this concept so difficult to understand.

What makes it worse is that they generally start making things up and going on about 'rip off Britain' which for the most part isn't even true.

I had one person trying to catch me out by linking me to a GTX295 that was £50 more expensive over here than in the US. Even when I pointed out that the VAT would equate to £50 they ignored it and carried on talking about 'rip off Britain'

They were going on about how the said GTX295 was $500, so that proved I was wrong.

$500 = £300 + VAT = £350, and what do you know? The same GTX295 was £350 in stores at the time.

Are you kidding? 1600 shader count? Is that the same count as in as 216 shader count in my GTX 260? Surely thats not right...

Since when have 216 and 1600 been the same number?

With the architecture ATi uses currently it's about 5 ATi shaders = 1 nVidia shader.

To directly compare amount of shaders doesn't really work as the chips work a lot differently.

But basically, divide the ATi card's shaders by 5 and that's how many nVidia equivalent shaders it has.

So the 4850/70/90 has 160 nVidia equivalent shaders, but due to the differences in how they work they give different performance, as obviously a 4890 is faster than a 260, a 4870 is on par with the 260, yet has 56 less 'comparable' shaders.

You can't really compare them... but to give a rough idea of the capabilities in terms of nVidia then divide the ATI number by 5 then multiply by 1.4 which I think gives you a ballpark nominal for the architecture efficency.

Thats not even taking clock speeds into account but its a good guide according to a friend of mine whos been testing some shaders for the game engine hes working on.

For the umpteenth time, import duty does not exist on graphics cards. the only charge on imports done properly by businesses would be VAT.

I don't understand why people rationalise what are high prices, by saying they are actually normal because we get charged a multitude of imaginary taxes.

History has shown us that UK prices converge on US MSRP (at exchange rate of time of sourcing) + VAT.
