Best 1TB HDD..

Performance is either Caviar Black or Seagate 7200.12

the seagate has the larger platters but from what i have picked up dissapointing performance. Great for sequential read/write I think but not so hot on everything else.

Samsung are good but the Black beats them (and costs more)

I've read many posistive reviews on the Samsung F1. They'll be my next HDD's when I next upgrade.

Wouldn't touch Samsung drives with a barge pole because of the experience I have had with them.

Western Digital gets my vote..

Samsung F1 or Seagate 7200.12. Wouldn't go near a Seagate after the issues they've had, so get the Samsung. The Seagate is quicker though....

You're not the only one.

1TB WD Caviar Blacks beat the 1TB Spinpoint in virtually every test. Not only that but they are more reliable and only cost a few quid more :)

The Samsung F1 and WD Black are still current, so the link is still relevant. There are other drives to consider such as the Samsung F2 and Seagate 7200.12 both of which have 500GB platters, but the performance of the F1 suffers due to it's slower rotational speed and the 7200.12 has slower access times. There is the new (is it available in the UK yet?) Samsung F3 to consider (an updated F1 with 500GB platters), but I haven't seen any reviews. I've also seen it mentioned that WD will be updating the Black series with 500GB platters sometime soon too.

My experience differs. I find it hard to find a cooler running HDD or quieter. I've tried WD and Seagate. Used them in NAS boxes 24/7 and found the Samsungs run about 3C cooler. High temp is what leads to wear and eventual death.

Make sure whatever you buy has the least platters you can get. Just tried the Samsung F2 500gb single platter - its SO quiet and cool. I wasnt sure it had been on as the casing was bearly above room temp.

Seeing as it's a single platter 5400rpm drive it should be cool when compared to a 7200rpm drive.

Should you also make sure it has a slower rotational speed too. I would have more faith in a WD Black or RE drive as they have a 5 year warranty (of course make sure you back up anything important too).

That's what I always used to think, but the extensive statistics done on Google's server farms seem to say it's not much of an issue : http://labs.google.com/papers/disk_failures.pdf

But I'd still totally agree that a cooler running HD is beneficial for the whole system :)

I've bought 6x WD10EADS and 2x WD20EADS and found them brilliant compared to seagate's and earlier WD's - my WD5000YS's run noticably hotter/louder in comparison.
The EADS series are almost silent - more like a modern laptop HD, and barely get warm and still pull over 100MB/s linear transfer.
