Uni debt... how much and are you worried?

I graduated 7 years ago. I came out with a 9k debt and it's now down to around 4. I really feel for the students graduating now with £30k+ debt. It's going to take a long time to pay that off even with a reasonable salary.

About £26,000

Im emmigrating after I graduate, so this country won't even get a penny of it.
I encourage everyone else to do the same, **** the baby-boomers. They've screwed us over too much, enough is enough.

So you're leaving the country, without paying anything towards the world class education you've received, not only at university but in your previous 13 years of education and you're complaining about other people.

How much goes on tuition and fees and books/stationary , nobody can spend £35k on that.

It depends on what course you are doing but it's about £3,000 per year for general undergraduate tuition from the last time I looked, £5,000+ per year for a more specialised subject such as a Diploma in Legal Practice - doing a Masters or PHD might well cost more.

That doesn't include living costs either but you can budget a few thousand pounds per year for that as well. So depending on what you do at university it is easier than you might think to rack up those type of costs.

You still have to repay the loan even if you live and work outside of the UK.

I see.

Surely rents not that much over 9 months, plus a part time job would cover that.

As a rough guide for halls in Dundee (not the most expensive area of the country) you'd be paying getting on for £3,000 and upwards depending on which halls you chose. Average rent in the private sector would start at around £200 per month but that is at the lower end of the scale and wouldn't include bills generally.

Also you shouldn't forget that not all students go home over the summer holidays so it isn't a simple case of paying 9 months rent.

Well the 13 years before uni probably weren't world class if my experience was anything to go by. ;)

3 years undergraduate tuition - ~£3000
2 years postgraduate masters - ~£12000
1 year LPC - £9000
6 years accommodation - ~£20000+

So that's more than £44k for me, if I don't secure sponsorship.

Saying that, I won't do the LPC without it.

LOL. Well the procedure is once you leave you get intouch with the student loan company, tell them where you live, and then agree to pay a certain amount of your salary.

If you don't tell them, the interest will just keep on accumulating, and they will fail horribly at trying to locate you. And even if they do, how are they going to enforce a debt which isn't leveraged on anything?

Probably not a good idea if you plan to come back after several years, but if you're gone for good (like I will be), its a plan. I couldn't care less.
**** the British Government. **** slaving away for 25 years to buy a 1 bedroom flat. **** the working hours. **** the climate. **** the british culture.

I do find it quite annoying that people doing apprenticeships for example GET paid whilst learning their trade whereas students have to fork out £20k + to get the equivalent.

Glad to be rid of you :)

They get paid..... but in many cases get paid less than the minimum wage (Y).

Still a hell of a lot more than a student gets paid. Oh wait, students have to pay!

I'm not saying students should get paid, I'm arguing that those doing apprenticeships shouldn't.

yes, agree with what you say. lots of us have disappeared from the SL system,

must say i find it absolutely sickening that we dont get what the scottish get for free

the whole systems is one big mess. i swear if i ever go mentally ill im starting a fight club style group of nutters who take down student finance

i remember asking for a CDL took out the full amount then stuck most of it in the bank, gained interest and got a tax refund, paid it all back once my course was finished. The bank wasnt to happy about it when i paid it back 3 weeks after my course ended.
