Most of our street and a few houses from neighbouring streets have just gone without electricity from 7am Monday morning to 3am Tuesday. That's 20 hours without hot water, TV, PC, PS3:o, and even without light (well from 8.30pm onwards)!!!

It just reminded me how heavily I depend on all these things and 1 day without them was like torture. Kinda sad really if I think about it. Whats the longest you have been without electricity?

The worst thing was no hot water, I definately take these things for granted.

Afew of the neighbours plan to claim for loss of food because obviously peoples freezers shut off and so I think we can claim back for stuff like that but anyone know how much? 20 hours has never felt so long let me tell you. :p

and this is why i have three torches, two weeks worth of batteries, a huge pile of candles and a very large supply of books.

i actually Relish powercuts - they give me nice relaxation time. a good book and a cup of tea :D

I just keep a blowtorch and the neighbours tree...

I wouldn't bank on getting anything. We had a neutral fault last year and the power was off for 4 days. It was like getting blood out of a stone. In the end, Balfour Beaty admitted liability and we received £200 as a 'goodwill' gesture. Most of the electrical items in our house went pop, and if their team of fix it guys couldn't fix it, then we were basically told to claim on our house insurance.

I know what you mean - we had a 3 day power cut a few years ago - someone clipped an underground cable with a digger, and it took a year for moisture to rot through. As they had no idea where it had happened, they had to dig up A LOT of cable.

Very exciting though - local pub served by candlelight, the THREE houses around here that had gas to cook on were fantastic in providing hot food/water to the entire community. Western Power were hours away from shipping over portable generators to us when they found and fixed the fault.

I wouldn't mind having no electricity for 20h in the past but nowdays that would mean a total wipe of my marine nano tank as its very dependent on stable temperature and water flaw.

Power cuts are brilliant. People seem to panic like the end of the world is going to come knocking at the door. It should be your house insurance that coverrs you, NOT the leccy company.

Plus think of all that money you saved not using your PS3/TV etc. ...

meh, i'd have just read a book for the day, i wont say i could go without my electirics indefinitely or for a long period of time, but a day? even a week would be no problem, got plenty to catch up on.

However if the electricity company have provided power outside of the contracted (and possible legal/standard) then surely they're liable for the damage they've caused?
